I have been attracted to holistic healing since I was a child.  I honestly don't know why, for sure.  Born in 1961, I was a kid with this spray and that "stuff".....  but I somehow noticed that there were "natural" things in all these new products designed to help.  My mistrust of conventional medicine was also groomed in those early years, as I was afflicted with the effects of undetected Spina Bifida and other lovely things I would find out about in the past decade.  I saw the balance, though, between natural and necessary, to some extent.

 

At the age of 14, I began volunteering as the lowest on the totem pole at the neighborhood Vetrinarian.  I loved animals more than most people, so I was really dedicated to Dr. Johnson and the rest of the staff and did not mind cleaning anything or checking in on weekenders.  He was my first boss and he was something of a, dare I say Diva, if there is such a thing for Veterinarians who really knew their stuff.  He was a difficult employer, lets just say.  His heart was always in the right place, though.  When I was old enough to get legally employed/paid, I mustered the courage to ask to be given hourly pay, etc..  I was so nauseated! It was just a few weeks after a pivital moment in which I called him on his "difficult" self.  Everyone stood silent for a short moment until he grinned and proclaimed, "your not afraid of me any more!".  Talk about a lesson.  We all laughed and the liicensed techs had to pick their jaws up off the floor.  It was great.  It was a busy medical practice like any other, just that the patients had four legs, and their owners were a lesson in many things psychological, to say the least.

 

Almost as soon as I got my technician schooling done, I was married and starting a family.  I knew it would be there when I was ready.  Then something changed.  I had a daughter.  A very difficult pregnancy hinted to future diagnosis of Systemic Lupus.  The wonderment of Motherhood and all things birth related became my new passion.  I wondered about becoming an RN and doing what these nurses were doing.  Then came a complicated delivery and time in the Neonatal ICU for my sweet baby.  I was in awe of the nurses and it was pretty much solidified on the day of her birth, that I wanted to do that.

 

I had an amazingly gratifying 17 yr. career as an RN.  Labor and Delivery, NICU, taught Infant Massage, had a two year private practice of biofeedback in there somewhere.........  Holistic medicine is alive and well in that area of hospital nursing, thanks to the selfless nurse midwives who recieve sub-par pay, but do more to bring a baby into the world in a sacred way than almost every MD I delivered a baby with.  That sacred moment of birth.  What moment could be more important to have all energies balanced, every tool available for a woman who wants a "natural birth".  Though few met their written birth plan goals, they were given as little "western medicine" as possible.  We broke through a lot of crazy practices, too.  As a group, nurses are taught to be more holistic and that patient teaching is paramount.  If you can't communicate information and know it is recieved, you are not being holistic.  I say this because, from both RN and patient view, knowledge is power. 

 

Empowered patients are not to be feared by western doctors, but there is a definite dissconnect that is, well, stuck in my craw.  Patients are running around out there taking every new pill on the market without doing any research themselves.  This is partly because doctors do not have more than 8 minutes with each patient.  Yes, that is the average.  Doctors are also bombarded by patients who see adds on TV promising relief from something they may be afflicted with. 

 

That our first response to a problem is a pill sends me on a tazz moment.  There are so many old-fashioned, tried and true things we can do for ourselves at home without bothering the doctor.  For example:  patient"s feet hurt terribly after working all day and there is some mild inflammation noted.  RX?  you know..... a pill that we all probably have, and maybe should have,  in our medicine cabinets.  Holistic approach:  soak feet in warm water with epsom salts and any essential oil you like.  Epsom salts is a natural muscle relaxant that is absorbed through the skin by doing this.  Aromatherapy is just, well, wonderful.  Next, check all shoes and get rid of ones causing problems or have a podiatrist or shoe place put well placed felt under your insoles.  Use extra good shoes for work.  Stretch several times during the day.....  and encourage your co-workers to do the same.

 

I am passionate about this subject and there is just so much more in my soap box .............  Humanity is One, lets treat it that way.

It is wonderful to get out today and work in the yard. This has been a crazy year, with two brain surgeries and another procedure. The yard is only now looking like "my garden" again. I cannot wait to just sit on a warm evening and not be pulled off by my chair by the weeds!
Gardening, or as I call it: playing in the dirt, is a great thing we can do for our health. Allergies not whithstanding, working with nature in any way is just plain good for you. I find it pulls me into a meditative rhythm.
Holistic health starts with the simple things. What is your favorite way to play in the dirt?
Getting back to Holistic health.... I was always interested in the subject. While working, I belonged to the Holistic Nurses Association. I became fascinated with the connection between mind and body. I became certified as a biofeedback therapist, as well. When I was able to raise the skin temperature of my hand by 4 degrees with just visualization , it was clear that we each possess the ability to affect our physiology in many ways. Doctors, back then, were blaming a lot of issues on stress, including my first Lupus flare. What was clear then - and now - is that the remedy was as vague as the word, etc.. America, I quickly learned, was slower than others to encourage respite, play, meditation. In many parts of the world, you must take your paid vacation. I began to learn how to relax. I learned so much more than relaxation, however. Decades later, this is the keystone, if you will, to my survival through the coming health issues.

So, in thinking of holistic health, AI see it as like building a house. . . . The foundation is critical. Learning to quite the mind and find a partnership with your body and create your own individual dance. Many people think think if their health is poor, they failed. Not the truth. We each have our own
Illnesses to deal with. Each is different. The individual house will have it's individual foundation that will show up if it is meant is in your DNA. The point is to learn your dance. Go find an absorbing creative interest or meditate. Even household chores can become a practice in mindfulness. Become the observer if you can. You begin to know your own energy.
