Christmas is right around the corner. If we wish to do Christmas right, we should study from the masters. Who knows how to celebrate Christmas better than anyone? Children, of course. Having two children myself, I have compiled a top 10 list of Christmas lessons from my observations of these little yet mighty masters of the season.

1. Children believe in magic and miracles. Why? Because magic and miracles happen when you believe.

2. Children believe in Santa Claus. It makes them so happy to think that there is someone out there who loves them so much that they will travel around the world once a year to give them a gift. My daughter is 8 and talk about the truth of Santa is all over the playground. She asked me, "Mommy, is Santa Claus real? Because some of the kids say he's just made up." I asked her, "Does it feel better to believe in Santa or to not believe?" Her answer was "to believe". That's my answer too. You're never too old to believe.

3. Children love to play. Christmas is great for children because they get new things to play with. When's the last time you gave yourself permission to play a little, or a lot?

4. Children love Christmas baking. No child is thinking how many calories is in a cookie. They just enjoy it for everything it's worth then ask for more. If you're going to eat it, enjoy it - every bit of it!!!

5. Children love giving. Children love to give from their hearts because they know it feels good. Children give because they want to, not because they 'have' to - (you know, not until we teach them that).

6. Children love receiving. There is nothing better than to get something for no reason at all, except that you are loved. No pressure, no strings, just pure enjoyment and gratitude for the wonderful gift you have been given.

7. Children love shiny things - especially decorating with shiny things. I think it's because they see their beauty in the reflection. Can you still see the beauty in your reflection? Look closer, it's there.

8. Children love to laugh and have fun. Like angels, they take themselves lightly. (I think we adults have the most to learn from this one.) LIGHTEN UP!

9. Children love to create whether it's a picture or baking or a great idea for a gift. Creativity feels free and fun. Obligation feels heavy and awful. Make the holiday shopping free and fun. (By free, of course, I mean carefree and not "I'll just put it in my pocket it costs me nothing" free.)

10. Children know that the magic of Christmas comes from their hearts. They understand that when you're hurting, down, or upset, that a hug and kiss from someone who cares and a cup of hot cocoa will make it all better.

This Christmas may you feel the joy, magic, and love that is to be found in this season. Let that inner child out to play and bask in the wonder that this season brings! Enjoy. Enjoy. Enjoy. And if circumstances are such that you're hurting, down, or upset this Christmas, don't forget to let someone kind give you a hug and a hot cup of cocoa, even if that someone is yourself.
