The nice thing about this expectorant syrup is that it’s warming, fragrant, and full of great herbs that loosen phlegm and open up the lungs.
Sage has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic Medicine in India to loose phlegm and calm the average cough. And it’s also a very nice antibacterial agent that’s astringent and antiseptic. Thyme helps with coughs and spasms, and it also helps to bring down high fevers and relaxes so we can get a good nights rest. Eucalyptus oil opens up air passages with a wonderful aroma and helps with inflammation of the lungs… and it works great for breaking up stubborn mucus. Plus eucalyptus oil also helps as a good antibacterial agent and it’s also creates a nice warm feeling in the body… plus it stimulates the immune system.
Licorice root helps to loosen up mucus and helps with sore throats, plus it helps with the stress of having a nagging cough. Ginger helps to sooth away sore throats and help with coughs, and the aromatic nature of ginger is great for opening up the lungs. And in Ayurvedic Medicine ginger has been used for thousands of years for treating coughs. Mullein has been used for hundreds of years by Native American tribes to treat coughs, colds, to loosen up mucus and respiratory spasms.
Horseradish is a good antibiotic agent and it also helps to break up mucus, open up sinuses, and has been used for treating coughs and cold for centuries. And it’s also a good muscle relaxing agent so we get a good nights rest… and thus feel better in the morning. Plus horseradish provides that warm all over feeling and opens up the nasal passages.
Elecampane is great for coughs, for breaking up mucus, and for soothing the lining of the lungs and it’s probably the best all around expectorant there is. Plus it’s a bitter which helps with appetite, digestion, and supports that body during times of debilitation. A small amount of cayenne pepper helps to block the sensation that leads to coughing and it warms the body by increasing circulation. And lemon contains limonene which is a great antimicrobial agent. Lemon boosts our immune system, and it increases the amount of white blood cells we have fighting infections.
All of these herbs are very important for clearing up lung passages, opening up the lungs so we can breathe deep again, and helping us to get a good nights rest so we can sleep… and thus boost up our immune system and heal.
This expectorant syrup is very simple to make… all it takes is going to a local health food store and finding all the ingredients and putting it together in no time at all.
Enjoy and feel healthy again!
