A terrorist wants you to be afraid and to think they are crazy. A terrorist wants you to believe you are in danger and have no control over your life or safety. A terrorist wants you to start looking at Muslims or those from Arab descent as the enemy. Then, when we begin treating every Muslim or Arab as a terrorist and with disdain and disrespect, we open a door to that person to become radicalized. We plant a seed that says “those Western people are your enemy. They don’t respect you. They don’t care about you like we do. They need to be punished.” And so, the brainwashing begins.
Don’t be brainwashed by believing every Muslim or Arab is a terrorist. Don’t let hate enter your heart over a few insistent radicals. Don’t let them take your kind heart and respect for life and living. Don’t turn into a terrorist yourself, by wishing an eye for an eye. Hate does not solve war. If it did, we would be at peace by now.
What can we do?
We can keep focused on celebrating life and diversity. We can talk to our neighbors and let them know that while we are different, we are not hateful. We can let each other know that while we mourn senseless death, we do not place blame on those it does not belong to.
A terrorist act is done by a terrorist, not by an entire race or religion. That is what a terrorist wants you to believe.
Don’t fall in to the trap of hate and wishing for violence. Don’t allow yourself to be radicalized into believing all Muslims are the enemy.
We can be the energy of possibility for a greater world. We can be the voice of reason and kindness. We can refuse not to be afraid, and we can refuse not to be at war within.
Whatever energy we be is what we create in the world. If we be the energy of fear, then the Universe must create something for us to be afraid of. If we be the energy of hating terrorists or fighting terrorism, then the Universe must create more of that so that we can continue to hate and fight them. If we be the energy of harmony with people, then the Universe must create a harmonious environment for you and all those you encounter. If enough of us around the world choose to be the energy of harmony, then terrorism would not be able to exist.
We can not control the acts of terrorists, but we can control the energy we be and focus upon. This is a call for harmony not exclusion, not violence, not an eye for an eye, and not racial profiling.
That's exactly what a terrorist does not want.
