On A Weekend In August

On a weekend in August
As each year we all went
To hear Windstar presenters discuss
In the Aspen music tent

Where Al Huang grounded us with Tai Chi
Tom Crum centered us with Aiki
Rolland Smith lifted us with poetry
And John Denver's music set our spirits free

It was a Rocky Mountain high
Of the most sublime kind
A glorious moment in our lives
That we so seldom find

When Al Huang grounded us with Tai Chi
Tom Crum centered us with Aiki
Rolland Smith lifted us with poetry
And John Denver's music set our spirits free

We learned that we had a voice
And could take responsible action
If we were willing to make the choice
For only we can make it happen

As Al Huang grounded us with Tai Chi
Tom Crum centered us with Aiki
Rolland Smith lifted us with poetry
And John Denver's music set our spirits free

Now the Symposiums are no more
But the spirit still lives in our hearts
The message went straight to our core
As we remember the healing arts

Of Al Huang grounding us with Tai Chi
Tom Crum centering us with Aiki
Rolland Smith lifting us with poetry
And John Denver's music setting our spirits free

During the last weekend in August between 1991 and 1995 I found myself in Aspen Colorado attending the annual Windstar Choices For the Future Symposium.  The Windstar Foundation was an environmental organization cofounded by John Denver and Tom Crum that recognized the connection between the environment and spirituality.  It attracted attendees from around the world and featured internationally renowned speakers in the fiends of the environment, sustainability, spirituality, science and entertainment.  It was a great place to go to learn and be inspired.

  • Al Huang is a Tai Chi master and author who was born in China but raised in the US.  He was instrumental in reintroducing Tai Chi into China after the Cultural Revolution.
  • Tom Crum is an Aikido master and author who taught conflict resolution using the concepts of Aikido.
  • Rolland Smith was a national news anchor and correspondent, author and poet who served as master of ceremonies and had an inspirational poem for every situation.
  • And John Denver in my opinion was one of the truly great singer/song writers of our time as well as an environmentalist and humanitarian.  He wrote and sang some of the most beautiful, inspirational and spiritual popular songs I’ve ever heard.
