Meditation Methods: Three Ways to Still the Mind

Sitting meditation is the most widely practiced Buddhist method for clearing the mind and attaining enlightenment. The student sits in a lotus-like position or on a chair, hands palms up or clasped together for encouraging the flow and retention of energy in the body. The practitioner focuses on following his breathing. As thoughts arise, he allows them to pass without attaching to them, continuing his focus on breathing in and out. It is a beginner’s way of practice, and is commonly taught in…See More

Jane Roberts, the Seth Books: An Overlooked Giant

“You make your own reality. There is no other rule.” The phenomenally simple yet powerful plainspoken statement comes from a gestalt awareness that has lived numerous lives and is older than the Earth itself. Eighteen volumes were dictated by an entity calling himself Seth through author Jane Roberts speaking in trance, from the late 1960’s until her death in the 1980’s. Her husband at her side transcribing her words, it came to be called the “Seth material”. Her books now in reprint, various…See More

Nonviolence and Justifiable Use of Force

Posted on February 22, 2017 at 12:00am 1 Comment

Abstract:

A heated exchange between a Western Theravada Buddhist nun and lay devotees returning from violence in Myanmar touches on the difficult issue of nonviolence and justifiable self-defense. It addresses the Jesus message to love your neighbor and to turn the other cheek, and the seeming more realistic Catholic doctrine of justifiable force in a “Just War”. Nonviolence has been used in the civil rights movement by Martin Luther King in America and by Mahatma Gandhi in India’s…

Abstract::

In Buddhism, meditation can be practiced sitting on the cushion or chair and in any other daily activity throughout the day. When sitting, the breathing method is commonly used by beginners and for calming the mind before continuing with more advanced methods. Two advanced Mahayana Buddhist methods are the “hua tou” (word head), the student continually repeating a critical question to eventually skillfully penetrate to the state of mind before the formation of words and…
