It is only reasonable to wonder if a meditation practice is really doing what it is supposed to. Through various forms of emotional and spiritual blackmail many cult-type yoga teachers and groups keep their members afraid to either question or come to the conclusion that what they have been taught is worthless–including the teacher and the organization. Some years ago I received a letter from a man who had been practicing “the highest yogic technique” in one of… Continue

Who am I?
How many times do you answer that question? OK maybe not phrased like that, yet in every judgement, label or like and dislike you answer it. You became aware of yourself around age 3, by 4 you were getting the hang of it. You had a distinct personality and began your life’s work of defining that question of “who am I”. The problem with ” who am…

When despair for the world grows in me
And I wake in the night at the least sound
In fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
Rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron… Continue

What Pulls You to Distraction?
By Kathy Custren 819 (H&H)
It seems no matter now much we try to stay focused on something, any one thing, our focus ends up being pulled by some type of distraction. From the time we open our sleep-laden eyes in the morning, we are met with birdsong and the sounds of the world around us coming back to life. Multiple distractions face us morning, noon, and night. Some of us may have even more than one preferred distraction.

In The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying Sogyal Rinpoche identifies a primary problem in western society: a deeply embedded aversion to death. We teach ourselves how to live, he says, but our lessons fail to include dying, which other cultures approach with reverence as part of life. We avoid talk of death until we meet it head-on and at that point, we succumb to fear and panic. We are unprepared. An obvious reflection of this is society’s refusal to accept aging; we cannot allow ourselves to… Continue

All the Way Bold—Yes, You Have Permission!
by Kathy Custren
Could it be that many of us are too fearful to be bold? “Are we allowed to do it,” we wonder to ourselves. What might it take to prompt us into taking action, when we might very well be surrounded by others just as stiff and silent?
“It is best to ask… Continue

It’s pretty easy to love ourselves when all is running smoothly, when our work is stable and the relationships in our lives feel connected and balanced. But what happens when you get in a harsh argument with your mate, or when the company you work for needs to downsize and adds to your workload while reducing your salary? Where do we turn when life’s challenges meet us straight on and demand our attention?…

There is a distinction to be made between motivation and inspiration. Inspiration calls you to take action that is enjoyable and will lead to that which you desire. Motivation causes you to take action that is not enjoyable in the attempt to create a certain result. Can you see how inspiration works perfectly within the laws of the universe and the mechanism of physical reality, while motivation is counter to those laws.
We agree that action will create manifestation. But action… Continue

Self esteem is not a hot and sexy topic. Not even close. Most people don’t like to talk about their self esteem in front of others. But this is a topic we should all be passionate about. Self esteem is defined as confidence in one’s own worth or abilities. We can see how prevalent low self esteem is by taking a good look at our culture today. And unfortunately healthy esteem is not taught in schools or by many parents at home. But there is a lot we can do to change that. Once we become… Continue

To Worship or To Become
by Daniel Mitel
Mirra Alfassa, the famous Master known also under the name ‘The Mother’, said in 1956 to her most prominent disciple, Satprem, “No, no one wanted to become. To worship was so much easier.” People where smiling and didn’t understand the importance of this warning.
