6 Life Lessons from a Line Cook

Sometimes the most beautiful of lessons are contained in the most repetitive of tasks.  I worked several years in my twenties as a line cook while I moved around and figured out what I wanted to do with my life.  What I didn’t know is that that experience would teach me some of the most profound lessons about life.   Although the work was smelly, and alarmingly eye opening as to what passes for good hygiene and food safety, it was one of the biggest growth periods in my life.  You never know…

Singularity: The Point of Breakdown

Singularity is the point at which what we know to be true breaks down.  Whether it is a discussion of physics, technology, or spirituality, it is coupled with the transformation of time, space and reality. Scientists have always sought after quantifiable laws upon which the universe is governed, but in some cases, truth lies just beyond those laws.  We then enter the realm of the unknown we can begin to challenge these seemly immutable laws upon which we base our reality.  It is in this…

4 Reasons to Be More Playful

At some point in our lives we have forgot how to play.  I was recently at the pool with my son and I watched the moms sitting dutifully on the edge watching their young happily play, but never getting in themselves. Do we really want to forgo an experience only to ensure the integrity of our hair and make-up? We seem to value appearance and/or outcomes over the experience in many ways.  Can we ever master the art of living from the pool’s edge or does it require us to dive in and risk the…

Conscious Voyage: Reclaiming the Hero’s Journey

We have used the word hero to describe Olympic athletes, combat soldiers and people that have saved others from harm.  These exemplify moments of heroism, but it is not an act or a single attribute of greatness that makes a hero.  It is a journey, a connection to a collective myth. It is not another man’s story; it is the Human’s story.   Once we make conscious this journey, we no longer require the external reward or the masses’ admiration.  We see we are enough and we can seize the…

In MyOmpinion: Red, Blue & Rainbow

It is interesting to me that people still want to disregard civil rights.  Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court shot down the Defense of Marriage Act that has been in place since the Clinton Era.  This Act basically did not recognize same sex marriages, even if they were legally married in their state.  Thus, allowing the federal government to deny spousal benefits to same sex marriage couples.  I was listening to the response from the people who opposed this ruling and I was left…

Frequency-Based Learning

Have you ever heard of a scientist making a discovery and somebody, unknowingly and independently, across the world makes the same discovery?  In science, they call this, "multiple independent discovery".  Evolution, the telescope and even calculus are examples of this phenomenon.  There are many ways to gain knowledge in this world.  We often think of knowledge being learned through scientific inquiry, one discovery on the back of another.  But what if there are other ways to learn? What if…

Eroding Democracy: Why GMOs are About More Than Food

Nearly 50 countries worldwide severely restrict or outright ban the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).  Here in the United States, President Obama just signed Bill HR 933 which included a rider that bars the federal government from halting the sale and planting of genetically modified seeds, even if they are found to be harmful to human health or the environment.  The Farmers Assurance Provision, dubbed the Monsanto Protection Act from its critics, allows biotech companies to…

The Art of Surrender

We have a bad habit of trying to micromanage all aspects of our everyday life.  With this constant battle comes serious undue stress and imbalance.  Somewhere in our ego mind we feel that if we just exert our control over all the minor details that some how this will bring us a sense of peace and security.  The truth is we do need prudence and active participation, but how can we move more through life as a human being rather than a human doing?

Surrender is not the same as being…

In My OMPinion: Women in Combat: Diminishing the Divine Feminine

Growing up I was a champion for the feminist movement.  I played sports with the guys, even hockey, because I was determined to prove that I was better than them.  I won third place in my 5th grade speech contest, stunning audiences with a speech entitled, “Women in the Workforce”.   I was often quoted as saying, “I can do anything a boy can do, only better”.  Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely believe in equality for all people no matter the gender, color or sexual orientation.…

The Energetics of Heart Disease

Heart disease covers a wide range of conditions from heart attacks, to vascular issues, high blood pressure to strokes. In fact, heart disease is the number 1 killer in many developed nations. There are many promising lifestyle interventions that can help treat heart disease, but it is important to understand the energetics of it as well. We speak of the heart often in emotional terms, because on some level we appreciate that the heart is more than a pump or an organ. In fact, it is the…

5 Tips to Releasing Unwanted Habits

As we move into the New Year, we all get the itch to better ourselves.  We make sweeping declarations that we are going to kick our bad habits, lose some weight and make the world a better place.  These are all good goals, but they are coming from the wrong space.  They are reactionary sentiments coming off a month of holiday parties, too many rum and eggnogs and decadent holiday squares.  Causing your body, mind and maybe even your waistline to scream out, “enough”!  It is for this simple…

4 Spiritual Considerations of Genetic Engineering

“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity."

- Albert Einstein

The first thing that comes to mind when we think about genetic engineering is their use in food production.  From Round-up Ready crops to Golden Rice, genetically modified organisms (GMOS) have been part of a national debate for more than three decades.   In the wake of prop 37 being voted down in California, an initiative that would have required labeling of genetically…

The Culture of Consumption: Finding True Energy Independence

We hear a lot of talk about becoming energy independent. That if we could just rely less on foreign oil, with that one fell swoop, we could boost our economy and secure our state. In truth, the United States is increasing its energy production, we have been meeting more of our energy needs, but at what cost? The reason for this increase in energy production is largely a result of shale gas production and what they call, Tight Oil. Both of these involve similar processes that require…

International Day of Peace: A Conscious Act of Courage

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. “

                                                Mother Teresa

As the International Day of Peace is upon us, I see a world on fire and wondering why we can’t seem to get it right?  Does not the rest of the world’s heartache to see the children starve and die or see men roar and cheer over the death of another? Why is it we can’t see that the plight of the least among…

Consciousness-Based Decision Making: Blending Prudence with Awareness

It is hard to know sometimes what is the best course of action to take when left with a decision.  There is so much information out there it is hard to know where to start.  Many people like to take the logical road and make the decision with the best statistical outcome.  Others make decisions that are more gut based.  And even more of us make decisions without any conscious awareness at all.  As with all things, there needs to be balance.  Our society tends to praise and cultivate logical,…

Cultivating Self Sustainability

“We cannot hope to create a sustainable culture with any but sustainable souls.”

― Derrick Jensen

Sustainability is a word often associated with economics and environmentalism.  But the concepts of sustainability should also be applied to our health.  Our health and healing largely revolves around our self-care.  Although we can get help and advice along the way, it is our day-to-day actions that…

Is My Health Care My Choice?

I find the health care debate in this country frustrating.  It always seems we are debating the wrong points and once again getting caught up in partisan politics.  After the historic Supreme Court ruling yesterday where Obama's Affordable Care Act was found to be constitutional, I am again left frustrated with the national conversation.  Remember the ruling was to decide if the provisions were constitutional, not to decide whether they were good public policy.  There are several provisions…
