Most people at one time or other have procrastinated, which is normal but when it becomes obsessive and chronic then there could be an underlying psychological disorder behind it. Avoidance also prevents us from entering into our creative process and keeps us from experiencing life to its fullest. …

Even though it was only diagnosed about fifty years ago it seems that most people today have either dealt with or at least heard about ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Now there are variations of this disorder including AD/HD and ADD but basically the key behavioral signs in children are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Adults with ADHD often exhibit signs of depression, mood swings, anger and relationship issues, poor time management skills, and procrastination.…

Many of my clients are finding that today's stresses are causing them to feel at times overwhelmed and despondent. A major part of these feelings is the lack of energy or motivation to get out of bed, to do what needs to be done without procrastinating or giving in to the feeling that there’s no point in taking action. To remedy torpor and depression, you have to experience the vital life force that sharpens the mind and focuses the awareness like a laser beam. The traditional Buddhist…

Affirmations (meaning a statement said with confidence about a perceived truth) have helped thousands of people make significant changes in their lives. But they don’t always work for everyone. Why can one person have great success using this tool while another see's no results at all?
An affirmation can work as it has the ability to program your mind into believing the stated concept. This is because the mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real or fantasy. When you…

Most of us were taught that creativity comes from the thoughts and emotions of the mind. The greatest singers, dancers, painters, writers, and filmmakers recognize that the most original, and even transformative, ideas actually come from the core of our being, which is accessed through an “open-mind consciousness.”
In ancient traditions, open-mind consciousness was considered to be a spiritual awakening, the great enlightenment that dissolves the darkness of confusion and fear, and…

Today many of us are dealing with devastating losses in our lives from natural disasters such as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, to losing our homes, jobs and relationships. After the initial shock of any type of trauma there are of course the various stages of grief that everyone goes through such as denial, rationalization, anger and acceptance. For those who are on this journey it is important to have faith in yourself and your inner compass that guides you. If you do this, you’ll…

Last month I discovered an obscure holiday called Random Acts of Kindness Week that starts around February 14th. Now this seems appropriate since St. Valentine’s Day is supposedly based on the martyred saints who around 200 AD performed marriages for soldiers ordered by the Roman Emperor to remain single. Their acts weren’t necessarily random but they were based on kindness and service.
Today service, or Seva, as we say in Sanskrit, is essential for one’s transformation,…

It’s that time of year when we reflect on the past and plan for the future, and that means resolving to change those habits or circumstances that we’ve been unhappy with. For many of us, it also means making the same resolutions we’ve made—and haven’t fulfilled—year after year. Even though we all desire or even need to make changes in our lives, whether we are aware of it or not many of us are resistant to letting go of old…

One of the first steps in dealing with addiction is to discover the emotional cause of it, whether it is fear, depression, anxiety, or pessimism clinical feelings of emptiness. Many times these unwholesome thoughts and beliefs come from what I call the “wanting mind.” In wanting mind, we feel that our current state of unhappiness could be cured if only we could have the money, job, relationship, recognition, or power we had and lost, or never had and…
