Where Does Intuition Come From? (Book Excerpt)

Where Does Intuition Come From?

When the phone rings we usually want to know who is on the other side. The same is true for intuitive messages, but first, let’s ask ourselves: what is intuition? The dictionary defines it as "a feeling that makes a person act a certain way without fully understanding why?" We might add that intuition comes to us as a series of extrasensory messages; that we are being given answers all the time. The more we listen, the easier it becomes for us to navigate our way through life. But where do these messages come from – who sends it to help us out?

These helpful messages can be a godsend, reaching us through different channels:

a) The Angels

Angels are sent by God to help maintain order in the universe, each with his or her unique mission. They are not affiliated with one religion though they are more common in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. There are also hierarchies of angels, each with their own responsibilities. The ones we interact with the most tend to be assigned to Earth and to humanity. Guardian angels look after individual humans, guiding, protecting and inspiring us – while the Archangels look after specific themes like childbirth, healing, love, creativity, courage, beauty, art or life path and soul missions. The Archangels are what you would call lieutenants in an army of angels, each with thousands under their command to help us out.

Angels do not have a will of their own and their divine mission is to assist humanity and the Earth, with the good of all in mind. They won’t help us out if it will be at the expense of another, instead looking for a win-win situation. While there are fallen angels, we will instinctively know whether we can trust the angel that turns up by tuning into the feeling in our Heart Chakra. Archangel Michael is our chief guardian, helping us discern whether or not a particular being comes from the light. As a matter of fact, we can take any request to Michael or to our guardian angel and ask that they send us the best helper for that petition.

We can also reach out to an individual Archangel based on their theme. The Archangels are multifaceted and we may be surprised to see who turns up on a particular request. Nevertheless, these are some of the themes that the Archangels are often associated with:

  • Archangel Michael is our guardian he looks after those who cannot defend themselves. We call on him for courage, strength, determination and protection.
  • Archangel Raphael’s mission revolves around physical and emotional healing. He can also step in during medical emergencies, illuminating health workers if we ask him.
  • Archangel Gabriel looks after artists, journalists, mothers and those who lack a voice in society. He can also help us with self-expression, Intuition and writing projects.
  • Archangel Uriel works behind the scenes, sending guidance on life path and purpose. Uriel often sends a human guide or advisor to help us find our path.
  • Archangel Haniel is a healer. She also enhances our Intuition. She is often associated with the moon’s phases and with Venus’s healing powers, which are based on love.
  • Archangel Jophiel inspires artists of all kinds, helping them channel abstract energies into painting, sculptures, film and photography. He also helps beautify our thoughts.
  • Archangel Chamuel, the angel of unconditional love, fills our hearts, minds and bodies with love, encouraging us to share this energy. He teaches us to love ourselves, and others.
  • Archagel Sandalphon is the angel of prayer. He is said listen to our thoughts and what is in our hearts, taking our requests up to heaven where they are processed.

The more we connect with the angels and the Archangels, the easier it becomes for us to work as a coordinated team. Whereas spirit guides tend to coach us from the sidelines, the angels step in to catch the ball and run with it when we need to score a touchdown and can’t get to the end zone ourselves. Of all the light beings, they are the closest to humanity.

b) Spirit Guides

Spirit guides are for the most part beings who led an earthly existence, one where they excelled in a specific area. They coach us from the other side so that we can make the most of their knowledge, before coming back to Earth to continue developing other skill sets. So for example, we might have a guide who was a champion when it came to science, business and technology but not so great at personal relationships. Until they are ready to come back to work on their relationship skills again, they coach us on all matters pertaining to science and technology. Some spirit guides are said to have lived on other planets or other dimensions, but their value is in what they can teach us now and not where they learned it.

We often have a single guide with us through life to coach us on recurring themes, and temporary guides that come and go as we embrace new challenges. For example, a Reiki practitioner may have a healing guide during her whole life, and a temporary parenting guide when her children are teenagers. Guides often communicate intuitively, guiding us with coincidences and chance encounters. If we learn to listen to them outright we can make their jobs and our lives a lot easier! They can also give us clues as to our life purpose and some of our hidden talents. This is how I found healing – my spirit guides introduced it.

c) Your Higher Self

When we are stuck in a big jam, there is no better source of information than our Higher Self. This is the awareness we had before birth of where we come from and where we are headed, and to some extent, that knowledge is buried in our subconscious. We can access its guidance through our Intuition. Our Higher Self understands the role we chose in this life, why we chose it, and where it will take us in the future. When we are at a loss for words or struggling to find our path, the most accurate GPS instructions come from our Higher Self.

d) Messages from the Ego (not our Intuition)

We also receive apparently intuitive messages that are fabricated by our fears, and part of the challenge early on is learning to differentiate between the two. If the message is timely, useful and empowering–even in tough situations–know that it comes from the light. If it scares us or plays to our fears, it is likely from the ego. Our angels and spirit guides will always help us find a way to improve on a tough situation, or at the very least tolerate it. In either case, it is important to practice the art of discernment and take on board advice that makes us feel supported and empowered.
