Five Ways to Manage Our Energy During Major Life Challenges

Abstract: Major life changes are more likely to throw us off our path of conscious living than anything else. Even the most spiritually grounded souls can lose control when the stress is beyond measure. And yet, these stressful times in life are truly gifts that offer the most opportunity for growth and creating positive change in our life. Managing our energy is of the utmost importance during these times, and it’s also the most difficult to manage during these times!

The toughest times in life are usually the times when we have the opportunity to change the trajectory of our life. Major life changes or crises such as death, job changes, divorce, loss of family home, major accidents, health challenges, etc. can cause the most spiritual of us to spin out of control.

The tricky thing about managing major life events is that when we are experiencing pain or fear we are more prone to react than respond. The intenseness and often suddenness of the situation is likely to throw most of us off our center. The truth is it’s in these very moments that it’s most important to stay centered and control our energy. Because how we react will determine what happens next.

When life is tumultuous it is preparing us for something greater, says American Singer Usher in his Master Class interview with Oprah. The Universe brings us larger and larger obstacles to overcome the more we grow.

Every time you are ready for an up-level or a growth there is a breakdown of the old. It’s known as the Law of Sacrifice. You must let go of the old to make room for the new. This breakdown often shows up as a major life change or crises.

How can we manage our energy during a major life crisis? The key is to not let life happen to us. We need to respond back, not react. It’s important to not react to events unconsciously, but to make conscious decisions as you navigate the rough waters. Reacting from a place of shock and fear is the biggest reason our energy takes off and we react rather than respond.

Here a few tips to keep our energy under control during a major life change and not let the event take over.

  1. Take time to be quiet. Breathe deeply. Take time to ground our body's energy to the earth.
  2. Allow emotions to flow through us and release them. This may be an ongoing exercise until all the emotion has released. Don’t hold it in!
  3. Ask the body what it needs. It may range from sleep to a hike in nature to talking with a trusted friend. Listen with an open heart and follow through.
  4. Eat and drink healthy foods. Particularly during times of stress, it can be easy to overeat and drink alcohol. This is a time where our focus on what goes in our bodies directly effects what comes out and our ability to stay present and focus our energy with choice.
  5. Be particular about who we allow in our space. People that drain our energy or are inherently negative need to be kept at bay during rough times more than normal. Set clear and strict boundaries, particularly if they are involved in the current crises.

Stepping into our powerful self is called a growth for a reason! We are required to stretch in unknown ways to expand our energy to a bigger and stronger version of ourselves. In order to stay grounded and respond rather than react, it’s important we are conscious and keep manage our energy rather than let it spiral out of control.

Hi, Kelly.  Thanks for this article.    We need to have a brief abstract before the actual article begins, so if you would add one, I would be happy to then send this on to the publishers for possible inclusion in an upcoming issue.
