“Having a dog, cat, horse, bird, or even a fish can have great health benefits.”

Less Allergies - First of all kids that have pets are less likely to have allergies. James E. Gern, MD, a pediatrician at the University of Wisconsin showed that kids that grow up with pets are less likely to come down with allergies, asthma, and have reactions to things in their environment.

Good for the Elderly - Elderly people have less anxiety if they own a dog or cat. And this keeps them moving because they have to walk and feed the dog, thus preventing a sedentary lifestyle.

And elderly people feel less isolated and alone when they have a pet… and caring for pets helps them to stay connected to life. And having a pet gives an elderly person a reason for being alive.

Lower Insurance Rates - Some insurance companies are giving discounts to seniors if they own a pet… because pets keep them active.

Great for Alzheimer’s - At the University of California at Davis, Veterinary Hospital it was shown that those with Alzheimer’s Disease were less likely to have emotional outbursts and depression if they have pet.

Less Disease and Less Stress - Studies show that having a dog or cat lowers stress hormones thus preventing disease… and produces an upbeat mood. And pet owners have lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and lower triglycerides.

Heart Attacks - Studies over 40 years show that people that own pets are 40% less likely to die of heart attacks. And those who suffer heart attacks live longer if they own a pet.

Keeps Us Moving - Dogs need to get out and walk… they need one hour of walking daily. What better way to stay in shape, and keep the dogs healthy than walking for an hour daily. This translates into walking 3 to 5 miles a day… just what the doctor ordered for good health.

Less Strokes - Research shows that those who own cats are much less likely to have strokes. Why we don’t know, but there’s some connection that seems to prevent strokes.

Nursing Homes - Nursing homes love dogs and cats, they find the elderly people feel less stressed when a dog or cat enters the room… and feel loved.  Dr. Allen R. McConnell at Miami University says pet owners feel much less lonely.

Helps Us Feel Good Again - Pets give unconditional love, they always want your attention and will give love no matter what happens. Pets sense when people are feeling down and come over and try to comfort them. And pets help those suffering from PTSD, depression, fearfulness, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and many other mental challenges. Having a pet creates oxytocin in our brain which creates a feeling of calmness and wellbeing… and we all need that.

Mentally and Physically Challenged Children - Children with mental and physical handicaps who are around horses, dogs, and cats have lower stress levels and tension.

Lowers Pain - Pet owners suffer from less chronic pain… thus they feel better, stay healthier, and are more active.

Diabetes - Some dogs can sense low blood sugar. This is important for a diabetic’s who get busy and need someone to tell them their blood sugar is low.

Cancer and Other Diseases - Some dogs are able to smell cancer and detect cancer long before it really gets started and spreads.

Some dogs can be trained to detect all kinds of different smells, even alerting people to the possibility of having a seizure soon… thus helping to prevent a life threatening situation.

Autism and ADHD - Kids with Autism and ADHD build a feeling of trust with pets… and have less emotional outbursts. They also learn to care for a living animal and feel good about themselves because of that.

Seeing Eye Dogs - People who are blind depend on their pets to keep them safe, give them a sense of independence… and live a full life.

Watching Fish Swim - Watching fish swim lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels, which leads to less stress.

So if you want to have less stress, want to lower your cholesterol and lower your chances of coming down with a heart attack… love your pet.

But don’t adopt a pet just to stay healthy… adopt a pet to GIVE unconditional love.
