4 Practices that Combine the Mind and Body in Unique Ways

Some people exercise their minds on a regular basis but neglect their bodies. Others exercise their bodies but neglect their bodies. You need to work the full potential of both areas in order to thrive as a person. Here are four practices that combine the mind and body in unique ways.

Meditation

Your mind might be busy for much of the day, but is it actually being productive? When you fill your awareness with stress or negative thoughts, you need to step back for a moment. Meditation allows you to observe your thoughts and how they come to be. From a physical standpoint, you need to have a strong pose while meditating.  Traditionally, meditating is done sitting on the floor, but many people also use cushions, couches, or other arrangements.  This all depends on your preferred level of comfort. Sit with an erect back and your eyes closed. Let your breath flow in and out seamlessly and notice how your thoughts come and go. There are many different ways to meditate, so find a style that suits you and your needs.

Yoga

If you want to gain awareness of your body through conscious awareness, try yoga. This ancient Indian practice allows you to focus on your body in full. Through different poses, you can realize how important your body is and how much it can do. Poses that were initially different can become achievable through constant practice. This exercise can also reduce stress and depression. Starting and ending your day with yoga allows you to bookend your day in the best way possible. Take a yoga class in your area and see how you like it. Yoga is an incredibly rewarding practice for those that put the work into it.

Tai Chi

When you think of martial arts, you might immediately think of things like karate or taekwondo. However, there are martial arts practices that don’t necessarily require any physical contact with another person. Tai Chi allows you work with your body and mind to improve yourself. Try out one of the five different styles: Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu (Hao), or Sun. Tai Chi is more like the art of standing, if you will. Through consistent practice, you’ll have a better mood and help fight against health issues you might be dealing with, such as type 2 diabetes.

Acupuncture

The idea of sticking needles in yourself to relieve physical and mental might seem counterintuitive. Nonetheless, acupuncture might have some real benefits. It addresses different points within your body, many around the nervous system, to help with things like stress and anxiety. The insertion might be painful at first, but as you focus, you can realize how much pain is in the mind.

How you treat your mind and body goes a long way. If you aren’t paying attention to your physical and mental needs, you’re going to pay for it. These practices will help you reclaim your sense of self by bringing your mind and body together seamlessly.
