There are many things that can affect a pregnancy. Artificial chemicals in the environment are one of the biggest question marks regarding the way that a growing baby is affected. Because of this, many pregnant women are using the philosophies of green living to try and have the safest pregnancy possible. Here are four ways to green up your life and protect your growing child.

1. Ditch the Chemical Cleaners

Chemicals in the house are one of the easiest things to eliminate, particularly cleaning products. Lemon juice, baking soda, borax, white vinegar and peroxide are all great cleaning ingredients that can be a lot easier on you and your body. Fit Pregnancy has a number of recipes for green cleaning products.

2. Clean Up Your Diet

Eating better is a major way in which you can clean up your body during pregnancy. If you are the processed foods queen, you don't have to switch straight to tofu-lentil loaf to have a green diet. Instead, begin by removing the processed foods from your diet, and trying to cook things using your own ingredients. Avoid anything pre-boxed. If you can afford it, switch to all organic items.

If you must choose only a few due to budget, start with milk and meat (you can get discounted organic meat by visiting stores on the day before their next meat delivery. They will often put items on sale to clear room for the new shipment.) Regarding produce, go organic with items that have soft, delicate outsides such as strawberries and peaches.

3. Practice Mindfulness

One of the biggest pieces of evidence that you are doing right by your baby is when you get to go in for a sonogram with a professional technician who has earned a bachelor’s in medical sonography (click here to find out more) and see them. You get a peek at the baby's face and possibly the gender. Your sonogram technician can tell you about the ten fingers and toes, and ease your mind about a healthy growth rate, heart rate and more.

However, between these times, it is important to practice meditation, coloring, walking or some other hobby that relaxes you. This will not only help de-stress you, it will prevent stress hormones from affecting the baby.

4. Be Kind with Imperfection

A green pregnancy is easy to achieve if you have already been living a rather green life. However, if you had not, then you may struggle a bit more and stumble along the way. This is normal, and it is important to remember that a stumble is just a place to rest before starting again. Be kind to yourself if you crave other things, and do the best you can with what you can.

A green pregnancy is a great way to begin your new baby's life. If you're considering getting pregnant, this is an excellent time to try and implement these practices, so that the shift is already in place once you get the good news that baby is on his or her way.
