5 Astonishing Health Benefits of Daily Meditation

Meditation is free, you can do it anywhere and anytime, and it has several health benefits. With these facts alone, you'd think more people would be participating in the healing practices of meditation. Realistically, though, there are only a few who really create space in their busy lives to meditate on a daily basis. If you're one of those people, below are five key benefits of daily meditation and why you should be doing it.

Improves Physiology

While meditation does not involve physical exertion, it still offers physiological benefits similar to those imbued by sports activities and intense workouts. For instance, meditation is said to lower high blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels, which improves circulation. Daily meditation also increases the energy levels, so doing it before your day starts can actually help you perform at a more consistent pace throughout the day.

Reduces Stress

The condition most commonly associated with the benefits of meditation is stress. Through daily meditation, you relax the brainwave patterns which are normally in a non-relaxed state. As you continuously practice meditation, you also learn to become more emotionally stable, which is manifested through the way you deal with daily problems.

Increases Confidence

As you clear out stress, you also flush out the insecurities and the "what-ifs" in your daily mental routine. You decrease your anxiety to things that may never happen. You also open your mind to learning, to meeting new people, and to taking advantage of opportunities that could significantly improve your personal and professional life. An expert from Inner Engineering says meditations like Isha Kriya can be beneficial for anxiety sufferers, since they assist in creating a space between the practitioner and their mental suffering. When you are free of anxiety, you are free to explore the world on your own terms, allowing your confidence to flourish.

Meet New People

While it's usually an independent activity, meditation classes are also very popular nowadays. This social factor further augments the traditional benefits of meditation. Through these social interactions, you stimulate your mind with new experiences and to new information. And with this newly acquired information and networks, you become happier and more active in life.

Helps People With Illness

While academic research concerning meditation is not as solid as that of nutrition or weight loss programs, it has been found to help people cope with certain illnesses. For example, the US Marine Corps is currently testing out how meditation can be used as a tool for troops to safely and quickly recover from field stress and trauma. Other studies are being conducted to test if mindfulness meditation and yoga can reduce the risk of depression among pregnant women.

These are only few of the many other health benefits of daily meditation. What's attractive about meditation is that the techniques are very simple to learn, yet the effects are transcendental.

Hi Emma,

My name is Regina, I'm one of the editors at OM Times. Thanks for submitting this article for consideration. I have a couple suggestions based on our submission guidelines:

- We  aim for 700-1200 words, can you expand a bit (perhaps with meditation pointers?)

- Please include an Author Bio, up to 60 words.

- If you'd like to link to your  website (is inner engineering yours?) it might be better to include that in your author bio, as links in the text rarely make it through to the published version.
