Immunity has always been important, but due to recent events of COVID-19, it is more essential than ever that we stay as healthy as possible. Our health is our vehicle, it gets us from point a to point b, it allows us to provide for our families, spend time with our loved ones, be active in our communities, create art and enjoy what life has to offer! In order to do that we need to keep our immune system healthy, and strong!  

One of the ways we can improve our immunity is by indulging in green tea. It is a plant that is full of wonderful antioxidants, which are believed to have immune-boosting effects that we all can enjoy! As an added bonus, green tea can be calming, which is helpful when stress lowers the immune system. Occasionally make the switch from the daily coffee, and enjoy some green tea instead!  

Another way to give ourselves a boost is by in taking of citrus fruits in particular, such as grapefruit, oranges, lemons, and limes. Many of us turn to vitamin C the minute we feel a cold heading our way. This is because vitamin C strengthens immunity, and gives us a fighting chance at getting better. Two additional fruits we want to add to our diets are papaya and kiwi. Papaya is a powerful fruit, that most of us probably do not eat on regular basis, however has anti-inflammatory properties partially due to an enzyme known as papain. Kiwi makes an excellent addition to the kitchen by providing various nutrients such as potassium, vitamin K along with vitamin C, and as an added bonus it is highly recommended for aiding in respiratory issues.

Certain vegetables that aren't always our go-to can help as well. Red bell peppers, spinach, and broccoli make the list as good sources of vitamin c, that are full of antioxidants with broccoli having specific enzymes that fight free radicals that lead to illness. When free radicals occur in the body, they are actively seeking out electrons to be paired with, unfortunately this action can damage cells, proteins, and DNA. 

Good choices in our spice rack can help us out in our time of need. The spices ginger and turmeric have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that strengthen our immunity! A simple, time efficient recipe is to add a pinch of ground, organic ginger to a hot tea with lemon with raw, organic honey. Trust that ginger is a potent spice, only a little is needed to feel the effects. We can also give turmeric tea a try! Combine ground turmeric, black pepper, and dairy free milk, add a flavor of choice such as cinnamon, vanilla, or honey, blend together, and let simmer for best results!

Many of us remember having chicken soup as children, when we were too ill to go to school. It doesn't come as a surprise that poultry, is one of the meats that has the mineral zinc that assists with proteins that help boost our immune systems.

As we age our immune system weakens. It is our job to take responsibility for ourselves, try to lead healthy lives, and help those around us. We cannot pour from an empty cup, and we can start by taking better care of ourselves! Along with these healthy, helpful tips try to also eliminate negative habits that may be hindering our immune systems such as excessive smoking, drinking, caffeinated beverages, and heavily processed foods!
