5 Weird Ways Education Affects Your Brain

Have you ever wondered how education affects the brain? It’s true- it can even get weird. Here are 5 ways education affects the brain.

Connections

Our brains strive to make new connections. When humans learn new things, the brain makes new connections. These neural pathways are birthed and strengthened when we learn things and practice them. It’s no surprise that education allows students to build connections. When students learn algebra, essay writing, or even public speaking, they are engaging in a key process that is built upon neural pathways. After repeated attempts, these neural pathways are patterned in our brains.

Malleability

Our brains are plastic- or malleable. This allows our brains to build neural pathways. Over time, our brains become less malleable because we often find ourselves at a point where we’ve done the same things, the same routine, over and over again. Rather than building new connections, our brains are strengthening the neural pathways that are repetitively being utilized. It can be argued that education, continually learning new things over time, can cause our brains to remain in a malleable state, ready to transform.

Sociability

Teachers have unique opportunities to utilize their classrooms to help their students’ brains become more accustomed to socializing. In an age where technology is the forefront of many classrooms, teachers can option for online learning to help build strong communication skills. An online learning environment creates an equal platform for students to socialize, a skill they can bring into their classes.

Reflexibility

Reaction the time: the way we respond to situations that happen in a blink of an eye. Education can play a role in how fast our brains are able to process information and act upon it. Doctors, for example, have been know to utilize online gaming to help quicken their reaction time. This continues to beg the question of online learning, and the multitude of ways it can be used in a classroom.

A Risk?

At some point, continuing one’s own education has the potential to be expensive and time consuming. In a process of risk versus reward, some people option to begin a career rather than continue with college level classes. Education can sometimes have a negative impact on the brain.

If one thing’s for sure it’s that education has some weird affects on the brain. Who knew our brains were plastic? Humanity is beginning to understand our brains more so than any other time in history.

Great article.  I have been diagnosed with Dementia.  Its interesting that my doctors scratch their heads for the disease isn't progressing the way it does in most people.  I do wonder if my passion for writing is a participant in that movement.  I'll share this article with friends as well as my wife, who is my best friend!
