Medical knowledge has finally advanced to understand that a healthy colon is in direct correlation to a healthy body. Take for instance if you have a horse which has a very large colon, if the good bacteria that break down food are killed then the animal will suffer with poor immunity, digestion, and other disease processes...  and can die.

Our colon is just as important... without good bacteria working to keep our colon working correctly we get ill... because good bacteria create acids that keep bad bacteria that can invade the gut lining thus creating illness in check. Good bacteria also produce mucus that protects the intestinal wall from being invaded by bad bacteria. Plus up to 80% of the immune cells for the entire body are found in the colon... so good colon health is vital for health and vitality... now there are over 800 scholarly medical journal articles on probiotics, colon health, and immunity.

Our good bacteria also prevent inflammation of the gut and the automatic autoimmune reaction that takes place if the colon and intestines do not have the proper defense in place. Thus inflammatory bowel disease takes over... promoted by allergic reactions that take place if we don’t have a good environment for good bacteria to grow. Good bacteria keep our allergic response in check thus preventing inflammation and bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, IBS, and diverticulitis.

The good bacteria or probiotics break down fiber into fatty acids that heal the colon wall and feed the cells of the colon and help to prevent colon cancer too! Also that same fiber is broken down and absorbed into the blood and thus detoxed by the liver and during that process it lowers LDL or bad cholesterol.

We can introduce good bacteria into the gut by taking probiotic supplements and foods that contain good bacteria such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, aged cheese, etc. But it’s just as important to feed good bacteria fiber so it will grow and keep bad bacteria in check... eating in lots of soluble and insoluble fiber keeps our good bacteria happy and growing.

Eating lots of fruits and veggies that contain fiber is important for good bacterial growth (kale, bok choy, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, and other green leafy veggies) and especially those that contain sulfur like cabbage, broccoli, and brussels sprouts will protect the gut from cancer.

Sugar triggers the growth of bad bacteria... and thus the balance of good and bad bacteria becomes out of balance and leads to inflammation. Also stay away from red meat and processed meats, smoked meats, and meats that contain nitrates... all of these are linked to colon cancer and harm to the bacterial balance in the colon.

Alcohol and soda will kill bacteria in the gut so it’s important limit the amount of alcohol and soda we consume. Plus smoking creates toxins that limit growth of bacteria in the gut... so it’s very important to stop smoking.

Exercise is very important! Clinical studies over many years found that people who exercised daily had a significantly lower chance of coming down with colon cancer. Also vitamin D is important for colon health and preventing cancer so get out and enjoy the sun!

Detoxing the body with a good detoxing agent like burdock root and milk thistle will remove cancer causing toxins from the colon... and it also helps the colon wall heal faster. Toxins in the body cause bloating, infections, PMS symptoms, depression, irritability, bad breath, acne, fatigue, headaches, and more problems... so detox and feel better.

Coffee irritates the colon and causes inflammation, and it increases stomach acid that can lead to ulcers in the colon so limit coffee to one cup a day. And did you know that coffee causes anal itch... it’s true and it’s common... some people come down with an terrible anal itching when drinking coffee, not a real problem... it’s just uncomfortable and embarrassing. So if you drink coffee and notice later in the day that you have an itch... just be aware.

Remember benign tumors found in the colon are signs that the colon is not happy... and it’s trying to get our attention.

Perhaps it’s time to make a few changes and have that colonoscopy done.
