You may or may not have noticed, but a revolution of red has been unfolding over the past few days. A Facebook profile picture explosion has been casting graphical debris even as the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) deliberates upon two critical marriage equality cases.
When I first heard that some genius had decided that this unfolding event would benefit from a visual symbol to represent support for equality in love I changed my profile picture. The idea of expressing sympathy for this cause, for what is yet one more historic milestone on the evolution of this sensational human experience, struck me as a compassionate no-brainer.
The case itself concerns the part of US law that defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman for purposes of US federal benefits. If the US Supreme court strikes this down same-sex couples in any state that allows same-sex marriage would be able to receive federal benefits.
This mere fact that the highest legal body in the US is even hearing legal arguments for this particular case echoes motion toward a similar milestone - that being the 1967 decision by SCOTUS to legalize interracial marriage. I cannot help but feel that a decision striking down the law in question is inevitable. However, that for me is only a part of the story.
The next day I logged into Facebook and was greeted by a message that reminded me of the human story. A friend had shared a very profound message. It started with a statement of what to them was the obvious. Even a billion Facebook users changing their profile picture would not have any direct influence on SCOTUS. The legal system is setup to deliberate such decisions in very specific ways, and the notion that a simple click of a picture would somehow have any impact on this national decision is futile in the minds of many.
However, they went on to add an "Except..." It turns out that their experience is one where their need and desire to express through same-sex union has been a roller-coaster in their life. They have felt alone, different, and dis-empowered in fully being themselves. And yet as they witnessed the tsunami of red they were struck by how many people were sympathetic to the cause. Strangers they never thought they would connect with could be visibly seen as supporters of same-sex marriage. What brought tears to my eyes was reading that, "In short, I feel like I got a little taste of God's acceptance today. And all thanks to a sea of garish ='s. Don't you dare tell me it didn't make a difference. Because to some of us, it made all the difference in the world."
This for me is the human story. I believe that our world, our experience of being human, is constantly evolving. I can read history and discern that we've evolved from throwing rocks and feudalism to non-violence as vehicles to defend those unable to defend themselves. We have seen law prohibiting interracial marriage struck down and I know we shall see the same outcome for same-sex marriage as well. Why? Well, it is simple. Whether or not you are aware of it, I know that we are living vibrations of acceptance, wisdom and compassion by means of, through and as us. We are immersed in a world where we have come to play through this experience so that we can remember what and who we truly are. There is a seed within everyone, a force for love that is beckoning us to remember. Evolution and the emergence of love, acceptance and compassion are as inevitable as the sun rising each morning.
And so the next time you wonder at what impact your words and actions have remember this story. It is easy to miss such subtleties in life, and so easy for the consequences of our choices to pass us by. Like the flapping of the butterfly's wings in Brazil setting off a tornado in Texas, the ripples of a simple and effortless decision to change your profile picture in a coordinated fashion cannot be measured by the direct impact on a supreme court justice (although, you might be surprised to learn that thoughts in the nature of Love do shift reality as we know it). The truth is there is no measurement system for the countless individuals who logged into Facebook to be confronted by an ever-growing sea of red profile pictures. All of them saying - I support your rights to be who you desire to be, and I accept you for who you are.
The world is evolving, sometimes faster than we would like and sometimes slower. You don't have to believe as I do in a power for good in the Universe being the fuel behind this evolution. But this story is proof that the smallest statement of expression can have a life changing impact on other human beings.
