Abstract: Autumn is a visual metaphor for the transformations we undergo. Intentionally focusing on the rich colors and symbols of the season allows us to follow the universal pattern of release and renewal.
Autumn is arguably the most beautiful of all seasons, rich in its unique colors, shades, textures, all representing movement and transformation. This occurs on a very real level as we see trees shedding leaves gently, moving from the vibrant greens to yellows, oranges, and reds and changing texture as well, transforming from soft and supple to crisp and easily crumbled by season's end. Autumn moves as a process through which we experience the changing, healing outer universe. We can align with the season's energies by recognizing our own need for change, discarding our outlived experiences, moving through our own darkness
for eventual rebirth.
Using the visual scenes of autumn, from the deepening reds and oranges colors and gradually shedding trees we can attune is to natural flow of the universe. We can the earth's cycle of renewal as a model for our own shedding and emergence. As we become autumn, we integrate that energy and reconfigure ourselves in silent meditation. The beauty of autumn as it progresses is that we delve deeper into the heart of the spirit with each step along a leaf-strewn path. No other season envelopes us with such striking beauty and promise. Consider the dominant fall colors: green, red, yellow, orange -- all mid-level chakra hues that help us function on a physical level. We came into this world to learn how to be spiritual beings in a tangible world and the heart, solar plexus, navel, and root chakras regulate our success and demonstrate areas we need to strengthen. We can use autumn energy to do this for our inner selves.
Here is meditation to help attune you to the autumnal energies to help you with your own transformation.
Begin with a deep breath. Inhale and feel the energy move through your body. Visualize yourself filling up with light. Then release gently through your mouth.
When you inhale, feel your belly expand outward like a balloon. Fill up with light. Release. Repeat two or three times until you feel relaxed.
Don't pull in or up with your shoulders when you inhale. That creates tension. Your goal is to release tension. You should feel your body utter a deep sigh when you exhale.
With your next breaths, invite the natural world to accompany with you, trees, animals, wind. See yourself at the core of the transforming earth, bonded with the natural elements. What sounds do you hear? What sensations do you feel? How does the wind move around or through you?
As you continue your deep breathing and visualiztion, you become more receptive to these energies.
Think about transformation, letting go, moving into balance.
In the next few months as the days grow shorter we begin to embrace more darkness. In doing so we recognize how much we value that light. We see partnership in the universe. As you breathe in, be aware of the ways the darkness has enabled you to move forward and the way the light has embraced you.
This is the yin and the yang, the Tao, going with the flow of the universe. We move into darkness, the cave of the earth mother. Visualize yourself in the cave. If you have animal companions, bring them in with you. Bring the elements of the breathing earth into this cave.
What thoughts arise? Let them surface acknowledge them, and let them go. Feel hugged by the darkness, a temporary void. For a moment let the universe guide you to your inner self and show you what you need to confront or befriend within yourself.
What do you need to discard?
What do you need to repair?
What do you need to invoke?
Keep breathing deeply and accept the answers, even if they are subtle or hazy images.
Consider the many paradoxes in our lives. As we move into the autumnal darkening and prepare for winter, we revel in abundance. We gather, we harvest, and we trust we are equipped for the winter change to come. In preparation for starkness, we celebrate extreme vibrancy. See how the universe teaches us to move in balance.
Visualize a pastoral autumn scene: once lush trees of varying fullness and height now a tapestry of deepening greens, yellows, reds. Visualize yourself standing in the midst of the earth's evolving riches.
See and feel the layers of light, dark, and color, interwoven as if designed by a painter. We are all of this. We embody our own autumnal tapestry. As we move into darkness we become the light.
Take another deep cleansing breath and when you are ready, return to normal waking consciousness a bit lighter.
