Coming of Age in Aquarius
The Age of Aquarius, beginning the 1970's, was widely heralded as a time when mankind had a vision of how life should be on Earth. The old modes of class and capitalism would fade into cooperation and understanding for the benefit of everyone. As a young man I was moved by spirit to grasp at this understanding through reading and dreaming of man's future existence, thinking discord and want would soon be long gone. Though there was not as much metaphysical help as there is now a few things stood out to me.
The Concert for Bangladesh was 1971's answer to the destructive power of tropical cyclones and tyranny in Southeast Asia. Organized by George Harrison, with many musical guests including Sitar legend Ravi Shankar, the concert raised funds and hopes for millions of people. The exotic sounds from long haired, bearded musicians highlighted a growing spiritual movement, Transcendental Meditation. Akin to Henry David Thoreau 19th century philosophy, it took further the need for basic change in existence. Focus a look inside yourself for understanding instead of adopting others understanding. Enlist the mystic to further your existence. Many paths can be walk upon, but they always lead you back home.
As the decade moved on two book titles offered existential advice; “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values” by Robert M. Pirsiq and “Your Erroneous Zones” by Wayne Dyer. More help on how to find yourself your own way, putting into focus manifestation by thought and action. Popular culture grew around zen, we were able to be 'in the zone' during segments of our lives. The trick is, how do you achieve zen when you most need it?
To find the native strength to achieve the zen life I dreamed about as a child start within your comfort zone. Exotic trace states guided by masters might not be for everyone. Use your instincts to start your journey, does this church or metaphysical practice seem right? Experience and contemplation allow the mind to branch out to new thoughts. It is not the practice, but souls, that moves mountains. Walden's pond, and any other Utopian ideal man has reached for, has always been held up by people moved by spirit.
It is said the Age of Aquarius is still running. Mankind will reach the zenith of Terran existence, where all work together toward the common good. Religion, science, and naturalism will blend into one study and release tremendous opportunities for all life on Earth. It started like a pipe dream from the 70's. People, continue on, at least for each other! After Aquarius, the next age of existence is gonna knock your socks off.
