I remember an evening - a long time ago, in my childhood, when my Dida (grandmother) came to our house. I was supposed to do my homework, but couldn’t put my mind into it. Because Dida was a great story teller - mainly dealing with the supernatural! I was dragging my feet, and my mother was scolding me for not finishing my homework quickly. I was trying hard to finish it, but just couldn’t do it - my mind was so distracted to listen to a Dida’s story! My mother kept on checking on me, but not much progress!

Then Dida called me to her room, and said "all right, I am going to tell you a small one, but you have to promise me to finish all your homework in half an hour". I happily agreed - mom went to her kitchen, and acted like she didn’t hear anything!

Dida started:

A very long time ago, there was a little boy named Ram, living in small village. He used to love his mother very much, but also was a bit mischievous, and often didn’t listen to her advice. But he was strong and innovative - was always exploring things!

Their small village was surrounded by jungle, in which many dangerous animals lived, including tigers! They had a once-a-week farmer’s marketplace, where people used to meet and buy their weekly grocery. The place was far from their home. A winding dart road, going through the jungle would take you there.

His mother told him to go there and buy few things. It was late in the afternoon - the sun was leaning towards the trees on the west. She told him to just go and come back, not to waste any time, because danger lurks in the jungle in the dark. Ram went there and bought the stuff quickly, and started home.

But on the road he found many interesting things! There were some nicely rounded stones, that he could use on his slingshot. So he stuffed his pocket with some of them. Then he saw some gigantic grasshoppers on a swamp that he wanted to catch and fly on a string! There were so many exciting things there! But he forgot that his mother told him to come back home as quickly as possible - before the darkness fell ! ... ...

Sixty years later, sitting in my comfy living room, here in the USA, I get all the important news stories around the world, such as:

Human Genome discoveries revolutionizing medical research ...

Science confirms presence of Dark Matter’s existence in the universe ...

People controlling robotic limbs and computers with their minds ...

Stem cells found in New Source ...

And many more !

And then:

Overuse of fertilizers damaging our bays and estuaries - sea grass disappearing ...

Human use of fossil fuels raising the Co2 concentration to an alarming level ...

The super-storms are going to be regular occurrence from now ...

Climate change: catastrophe in the making ...

The little boy kept on playing with his things - he forgot what his mother told him! Darkness was falling in the woods!

Dida said "now, time to finish your homework".
