We are all searching for happiness, aren’t we? In fact, the word “happiness” itself these days is to be found written and spoken anywhere we turn. It can be seen related to diet, exercise, work, housing, hobbies, relationships, family, meditation, etcetera. The society today lets us focus more on ourselves and what we really want from life, instead of just doing what we need to get by. We are allowed to put our own well-being first. This is a beautiful aspect of our everyday lives, which in itself would seem unproblematic. But there are certain challenges to be found here as well as with anything else in life. These challenges are related to what we choose to focus on, and the consequences to be drawn from it. This is often recognized as the Law of Attraction.

The Law of Attraction, put simple, says that what goes around comes around in terms of energetic vibration. What we send out, we get back. This sounds pretty straight-forward, doesn’t it? Well, a lot of us try to attract positive outcomes in different life aspects without any luck. Does this mean that the Law of Attraction is bogus? Fortunately, it doesn’t. But we often think that we are attracting what we want, when we are in fact doing the opposite. The Law of Attraction, as well as our brains, doesn’t quite understand the words “not”, “don’t”, “wont”, “quit”, “stop” and so on. In practice, this means that if we think or say “I will not be depressed any more”, the brain and the universal law only picks up the word depressed. “I will quit smoking” makes it focus on the word smoking. So, in fact, this leads us to focus on what we don’t want instead of what we do want. Here is how to use the power of language properly to ensure we attract more of the positive instead of the negative:

1. Outer language (talking):
Monitor what you are saying, ensuring that you are focusing towards something as opposed to away from something. If, for example, you are struggling with a depression you want to get rid of, make sure to put your attention to the wanted outcome. Instead of saying “I don’t want to be depressed anymore” (away from current situation), try “I want to be happy” (towards the wanted outcome). This will in addition make your mindset more positive, thinking of possibilities more than restrictions. And, it is more pleasant to picture yourself already in the wanted state, don’t you think? It’s almost like a mental vision board, constantly reminding and motivating you towards what awaits around the corner.

2. Inner language (thinking):
Monitoring is just as, if not more, important when it comes to your inner language – your thoughts. Oftentimes, we are much more unconscious when it comes to our thought activity, because it is constantly working in the background and we don’t even hear ourselves utter the words. Thoughts are energy, just like spoken words and performed actions. And we all know we think a lot more than we speak… So the first step is to train ourselves into becoming more conscious of our inner language. Pay attention to your mood at random times during your day. Are you feeling happy? When you are happy, what are you thinking? And the other way around; what is your thought activity like when your mood is low or swinging? A thought always comes ahead of a feeling. This means that if you are feeling bad, you must have thought something bad beforehand. It is often easier to notice mood states than thoughts, so it can be better to work our way backwards. Within a short period of time, you will most likely do this automatically. The trick is to turn your language from “away from-thoughts” to “towards-thoughts” when your mood is low. 

In summary, the effect of our actions towards a goal will likely be affected by both our outer and inner language. In both cases, the key formula goes like this: Recognize mood – monitor thoughts/words – reformulate thoughts/words to fit the wanted mood. The Law of Attraction always works – as long as we know how it works!
