It was in 1989 I decided to pack my bags and head to Europe, it was a solo excursion.
When I flew into Heathrow all the means of transportation where on strike, it was crazy
in the airport people were all up in arms, how would they get to where they were going?
Yet for some odd reason, I just seem to not worry, I just get myself to where I need to
go or get what I need. I traveled for many hours and loved to watch out the window
as I am a dreamer.
Once I got to my hotel we all were bunked in with Contiki travelers as I was going on a
Contiki tour of 14 countries .Most of the travelers on the trip were from New Zealand,
and Australia and some from the US and Canada. Our theme song was She Drives Me
Crazy so every time we got on the bus the same song would play over and over in our
Most of the people on the bus were there to party and have a good time, for me, I dove
into the food culture and surroundings of the European life. Most times I would wonder
around the cities on my own discovering the galleries and talk to the locals. Yet other
times I would venture out with the Contiki gang.
My true highlights where in Greece as we sailed to some small islands on a sail boat, I
love to sail. Also, I loved when we went through Picasso’s Museum his work made me
wonder of his life.
Then Turkey Istanbul the Turkish Bath:
My friend and I got there, and the woman took us to a room. We stood in this room not
sure what to do as we could not speak the language. Yet you always get by.
A woman with long beautiful brown hair entered our room she did not have any clothes
on and was very curvy and had no shame of her body image. Started to talk and told us
to get undressed. Well I for one was a very private woman, and did not go around
walking around naked. So I took my clothes off, and cupped my hands over my areas I
did not feel comfortable showing to all. The woman with long hair grabbed our
hands and off we ran exposing ourselves. She took us to the most beautiful room I have
entered in my life. It was a domed room and on the ceiling stain glass speckled the
dome. The sun beamed in. In the center of the room was a round marble structure.
All around the room were these places were we sat and water ran out of a fountain.
We were given a steel basin, and there we needed to cleanse our bodies with the water.
We did this for along time, as we sat there they brought Turkish tea and coffee.
The women were singing in their native tongue, and the steam was hazing over the room.
I was naked as could be, yet this was a safe magical moment.
When I was cleansed enough, a woman came to me and told me to lie on the round
marble structure. She scrubbed all my dead skin off with a special sponge, and messaged
me. Taking her time, making sure my whole body was messaged.
Then after she led me to another urn where she got me to sit on the floor.
As I sat she washed my hair, shaved my legs, and armpits.
That was one of the most amazing experiences I have gone through, all the women that
went with me felt the same, I believe.
After our tour we all had become such good friends, and I lost contact with them.
On that tour, I found out that I valued my country, my home, my freedom. Yet,
all countries have many good aspects and some not so good things, yet I believe
we need to look at the things that are doing well for our people our Earth
joining forces to value all countries all beliefs all cultures and live life in harmony.
