In the world of feng shui, black obsidian wealth bracelets are creating a lot of buzz.
As much as anyone would love a little push from Lady Luck, does it work according to the principles of Feng Shui?
When it comes to wealth, Feng Shui has a wealth of practices available, such as having a wealth corner, embedding gold coins with a red string under the front entrance, and the use of 8’s in financial transactions. So what does a black obsidian bracelet offer? There are some variations, and a quick search will bring up examples mostly with gold Sanskrit lettering over black obsidian beads, and a gold dragon.
If Feng Shui is rooted in Chinese beliefs like Taoism, are Sanskrit letters considered relevant? According to the Feng Shui Society, it is a philosophy that can be appliedto anything, so culturally speaking, the elements do not need to be strictly written in a Chinese Language like Cantonese or Mandarin.
Dragons are deeply symbolical in Feng Shui. They symbolize strength, fertility, wealth, good fortune and embody the yang (male) energy. Their connection to wealth and prosperity is deepened if holding a pearl in their claws. When it comes to placement, the direction they are facing is also symbolic. Because jewellery is worn it’s treated more like a talisman or a charm without the importance of direction. As a stand-alone symbol of a gold dragon they possibly embody the energy of wealth, but dragons are centrifugal creatures in Feng Shui that hold multiple meanings.
The application of crystals take a back seat in Feng Shui. Like all Eastern philosophies, Feng Shui is holistic, meaning dividing one aspect and one meaning is never the point. When Westerners use crystals, they’re often looking for a list of associated uses. Black Obsidian for example is associated with removing negative energy. Removing negative energy is often discussed in feng shui, and an ideal use for black obsidian would be a large piece near the front door. Good choices for wealth and prosperity would be green jade or pyrite.
Obsidian represents the element of metal, due mostly to its color. Wearing gemstones associated with metal can increase strength when needed, and can balance personalities strong in the element of earth who need to shore up their boundaries.
Are the colors of black and gold associated with wealth or prosperity? Gold is yes, but it comes with a hitch. The principles of Feng Shui never have one interpretation or meaning. Gold is associated with wealth, prosperity, the sun, and happiness. Red, purple and greenare also colors of wealth and prosperity. Color carries deep associations and affects everyone differently. While gold and yellow can feel enlivening to some, it can make others cranky and irritable. Remember when all nurseries were yellow? Yuck! It made babies cry, not sleep!
There are lots of way to bring in luck, prosperity and wealth. Unfortunately with all the interest in Feng Shui there are too many manufacturers that are eager to place the name on an item that doesn’t take into account the full depth of application behind it. Most versions of the obsidian wealth bracelet look like the living embodiment of a Zuma game, with a tacky gold dragon ready to devour its surrounding beads.
Aesthetically there is nothing subtle about a gold bracelet the size of a small state. Want to be bracelet buddies with Joey Tribbiani? Anyone? No?
Trying to decipher the labyrinth of placement, elements, color, direction, and symbolism in Feng Shui is never a one-word answer, but it’s fun to say the least.
In the words of Stefan Edmunds “Always keep mind that the strongest factor of your Feng Shui is you.”
What we love and are drawn to, is always an excellent place to start.
