Right now we have more people who are depressed and who are committing suicide than ever before. But there is a way to end all of this… we can make life better with one simple technique - Meditation. New studies at Harvard Medical School show that meditation does make the grey matter of the brain thicker in the areas of the hippocampus and this also brings about the ability to have more compassion, a greater ability to learn, the ability for more introspection, better memory, and a greater capacity for self-awareness. These measurements were done using MRI imaging over an 8 week period.

What this means - This is very important right now with all the stress we have going on in the world. People are extremely stressed out and depressed, and meditation can turn all of that around and create a state of deep peace. There are no drugs, herbs, or supplements that can accomplish this task. Meditation so far is the only way to make our brains bigger, more elastic, and able to adjust to every situation and feel deeply relaxed and happy again.

Life is Moving Faster - Right now everyone is feeling that life is changing very fast, and this is happening because we have more responsibilities, and more things pulling us in many different directions all at the same time. And our minds were not meant to deal with all of this. We still have the same minds that we had thousands of years ago. The only differences is we are being stressed to the max with more and more struggles.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - Lost of the men and women who come back from wars overseas are having a very hard time adjusting because they have seen things that no one should see. This has a powerful impact on their minds which this leads to insomnia, nightmares, depression, the inability to adjust and work well in society, they end up in divorce… and eventually alone and some take their own lives.

More Suicides Now Than Ever Before - Right now we have more suicides taking place than any other time in history. In fact there are more people who die of suicides and than there are people who die in car accidents. An we have more suicides happening now than we did even during the Great Depression. We have a 35% increase in suicides in people from ages 35 to 64. And this has been created by joblessness, anxiety, stress, and alcoholism… plus we have more teen suicides than ever before.

Alcoholism Is On The Rise - With all the jobless people or people who have to work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet, there’s been a dramatic increase in the amounts of alcoholism in resent years. Life seem to be getting harder… and so people start drinking in order to deal with the daily stress of life.

But There is Help - Meditation can help with all of this, and every thing that we have going on in the way of stress. It may not help the material situation but it makes it easier for anyone to work with the situation and eventually life does get better. Meditation brings about compassion for the self, a state of deep relaxation, it ends insomnia and depression, and helps with the nightmares, and it gives people a feeling that life will turn around and be totally fine. With meditation people start to smile again, find peace in their daily activities, and are able to connect and talk with people again.

It Just Takes Time - Meditation is not like taking a medication and all of a sudden everything is great again. It takes time, it takes sitting and meditating for at least 20 to 30 minutes in the morning and 20 to 30 minutes in the evening to find deep peace. And this has to be done every single day, no matter what’s going on in the world. But the results are almost immediate, in fact within 7 days a person will see a huge difference… and it stays with a person from that point on! But it’s important to keep meditating in order to make even more changes in our brains and keep stress from causing problems.

We Have the Answer - We have the answer to much of what life is throwing at us right now. But are we willing to take the time and sit down and learn something new in order to make that change? - That’s the big question.

Meditation is about letting go, so I will leave you with a quote by

Thich Nhat Hanh - “Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything - anger, anxiety, or possessions - we cannot be free.”

I agree Paul that meditation is a great tool to help so many people heal from depression and thoughts of suicide. When I was a teenager, I saw a therapist and counselor for years and while it did help a little bit, nothing impacted me more than my mediation and yoga practice.
