Rock Bottom & Beyond!
The great thing about hitting rock bottom comes with the realization there is nowhere to go but UP! September we reflect upon the symbolism represented in GROUND zero and the impact. Suddenly, an unexpected attack on U.S. home soil versus the diagnosis of a life threatening disease to the mind / body / spirit. Remember the shock when you think back to that September 11, 2001? The moments are permanently imprinted into my brain. 9/11 changed us in such a way that we can no longer pretend we are safe. Without warning, an entire society was forced to change our way of thinking as we realized how vulnerable we were. Some changes have been just a minor inconvenience – like the extra time it takes to get through customs or airport security. Even our luggage and carry on products have now been restricted. Perhaps with our nativity this was long overdue? A wake- up call! We can no longer ignore what goes on around us.
Each of us now has a personal responsibility to be aware of our surroundings, packages and individuals who behave questionably. Through one act a nation has been forced to question beyond what is reported as truth versus what is propaganda used to incite fear and control or manipulate us. Imagine your dilemma when the soil that is assaulted is your own body and the attacker is something you can’t even see? When a person is told they have cancer or some other life threatening disease – it feels just like ground zero! For those who ignore the signs and wait to be seen by a physician at a later time, the results they receive may be irreversible! The reality that life is not forever and there are no guarantees and we have a responsibility to our BODY. Imagine, if you can, being told you have advanced (breast) cancer, multiple tumors and it was now an emergency.
Over 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected this year and the numbers are expected to continue increasing exponentially. As 9/11 was to a nation and the world, a diagnosis of a potentially terminal illness is to a patient. In essence, a person hits rock bottom and realizes the battle has just begun, yet there is nothing more precious to fight for, than LIFE! It is out of those ashes that the phoenix can rise again and be re-born. Those who survive the chemotherapy treatments, radiation, hormone blocking agents, surgeries, scaring, physical, mental or spiritual pain often walk away with a renewed spirit and the heart of an adventurer!
My wish for everyone who hits “GROUND zero” is the courage to face the enemy and fight to live! Let them forever be changed so they can see life for the abundant gift that it is, not something to be endured. Grant the opportunity to share in their care through a shared interest in their health & wellness.
Through personal responsibility, each person acknowledges the significance of what goes in / on / around their body and they work diligently for PREVENTION not just Treatment. Once you realize most diseases can be prevented, you can disarm most attacks on home soil before they happen. As with all hostile attacks, generally there are subtle warning signs. If not heeded the long term damage sustained could be irreversible. The significance of becoming acquainted with your body cannot be emphasized enough. You must be your own medical advocate and notice the subtleties in your body’s chemistry. Do the research to find out what fruits and vegetables are best to fight disease and improve overall health. Ensure drinking water is FILTERED by a very good system to remove the toxic chemicals in the drinking supply. Exercise regularly. Incorporate breathing exercises or meditation. Upon surviving any GROUNDzero moment, you are given everything you need to succeed – LIFE! Use it wisely.
