Water Caltrop is special Asian Water Chestnut that is full of great health benefits that many people don’t know about. Also known as Singhara,Trapa bikornis nut, Bat Nut, Ling Nut, Wing Pod, Indian Water Chestnut, and Pani-phal, and other names this delicious water nuts have a wonderful nutty flavor that everyone will enjoy… and they should not be confused with regular water chestnuts.  

Where Found - These great tasting chestnut are aquatic plants that can be found in Africa, Asia, India, China, Australia and other parts of the world. And they are grown as a cash crop in China and India in modern times and they have been used as a food source for over 3,000 years. And these water weeds also grow in the US on the Eastern Seaboard from the North East and as far south as Florida. 

Must Be Cooked - Water Caltrops contain toxins that must be cooked to be eliminated. And some water flukes can also be found in water caltrop so they must be cooked before eating to make sure they are toxin and fluke free. These delicious nuts should be boiled in salty water for 20 to 25 minutes. They can also be fried or roasted and then dried and made into a rich gluten free flour for baking. 

Great Taste - The taste of Water Caltrop is similar to peanuts, brazil nuts, and chestnuts… they are very tasty. 

Rich in Nutrients - Water Caltrop contains lots of good carbs, they are cholesterol free and their very low in fats, contain some protein, and also some fiber for to promoting the growth of probiotic bacteria. And they also contain iron for anemia, calcium and phosphorus for strong bones, magnesium and manganese for enzyme production and for stress, zinc for boosting our immune system, and they also contain lots of potassium for cardiovascular health and for lowering blood pressure. 

Iodine - Water Caltrop also contains a good amount of iodine which is important for preventing goiter and other thyroid diseases. 

B-Vitamins - Water Caltrop also contains a good source of B-Vitamins thus helping to promote a good mood and boosting up our vitality.

Vitamin C - Caltrop also contains the powerful antioxidant Vitamin C which helps to prevent colds, flues, and other diseases.  

Antioxidants - These delicious water nuts also contains lots of antioxidants that are important for preventing disease, preventing and healing DNA damage, and for revitalizing tissues. In the Indian Journal of Experimental Biology it was found that caltrop could protect our nervous system from oxidative damage thus slowing the aging process.

 

Detoxing - Water Caltrop is also a great detoxing agent for the body and especially the liver, thus helping to bring about good health… and it also heals diarrhea. 

Resistant Starch - Caltrop also contains some resistant starch in the form of amylose which does not break down in the small intestine, and thus is fermented and becomes food for good bacteria in our colon. Thus helping to boost up our immune system and promote good health in general. 

Aquatic Weed - Caltrop grows wild and becomes a pest in some water ways so harvesting and getting rid of some of these plants is beneficial to our water systems… and it’s also free food. 

Eczema - For treating eczema make a paste of the cooked caltrop nut with a little water and lemon juice and apply to the area. 

Phlegm - Water Caltrop also eliminates phlegm and thus helps with the common cold and flu. 

Antibacterial - In the Journal of Medical Sciences it was found that water caltrop have a powerful antibacterial capability… thus healing bacterial infections.

Anti-inflammatory - Caltrop is a good anti-inflammatory food also helping with arthritis, pain, swelling, and redness. 

Gastric Ulcers - In another study with rats it was found that caltrop has the ability to heal gastric ulcers.

As a Food - Caltrop can be made into a version of marzipan instead of using almonds. It can be made into flour for all kinds of sweet baked good, for making Indian fry bread, for pancakes and baked breads, and as a very nutritious wheat flour substitute. 

Finding - Fresh Water Caltrop nuts can be found at Asian Markets, in China Town in NY and San Francisco, and other places around the world in the fall. And the wonderful flour can be ordered on-line and even found on Amazon.
