Hope…to have hope…to live hope…to be hope…to lose hope.

Hope is a BIG word…a BIG idea.

Hope can lift a soul from the depths of despair.

Hope can help one persevere through a crisis.

Hope can calm, soothe and inspire.

But, what exactly is hope and how can we lose it?

The definitions I found in the Webster’s Dictionary included the words to wish, expect, intend or place confidence.  To me, contemplating these words and the definitions, hope is an action where we place our power outside ourselves to elicit or expect some type of change.

But, what good is hope if there is no action behind it?  It seems to me by definition that to have hope would be more of a sit back and wait or let someone else do it for me state of being.

What if hope was a glowing ember deep inside you waiting for you to own it…to live it…to be it?  What if hope was the calling card calling you to step into your life, into your passion and be a healing influence and presence regardless of your situation or circumstances?

We can sit and have hope or we can have hope and propel healing, inspiring, radical energy into the world.

Hope can heal.

Hope can feed.

Hope can listen.

Hope can lend a helping hand.

Hope can provide a soft landing.

So how do we lose hope?  How do we become jaded, apathetic and complacent?

To me, losing hope is like lighting a match and watching it burn out.  There’s no action, no service.  We light the match but fail to put that match to a useful task.  That burned out match could have been a flame that nurtures and warms, a flame by which to cook food, a flame that allows a balloon to soar to new heights.  That’s how we lose hope.   We feel that burning flame within ourselves and fail to pay it forward.  Then it fades.

If you are feeling a loss of hope lately, ask yourself a couple of questions…

What are you hoping for?

What actions are you willing to take to help hope along?

What change or service do you think you could bring into the world if you pursued that hope in service to someone else?

Hope is a responsibility…A responsibility to yourself…A responsibility to your fellow man…A responsibility that takes courage, faith and action.
