Everyone seems to find themselves in a bad mood from time to time. It is part of human nature. Some may take sleep that frustration off or work extra hours to burn off the steam. Some turn to exercising or meditation as a way to calm themselves down. Another simple yet natural way to calm down is through aromatherapy. Through the promotion of relaxation and stress relief, aromatherapy can be stimulating to the body.

Certain scents are known to be relaxing. There is a reason by bath bubbles often contain scents like lavender or myrrh. For hundreds and thousands of years, aromatherapy has been used to help with relaxation. If you are stressed or experience occasional anxious feelings, you can use aromatherapy to help calm your nerves, clear your mind and refocus on the important things in life. According to WebMD, the fragrances from aromatherapy are thought to stimulate the nerves in the nose, which then send impulses to the part of the brain that controls memory and emotion.

Calming the Mind

In research studies, essential oils like lavender, rose and frankincense were used by pregnant women during labor. They experienced more calm feelings. As a result, they had a better sense of well-being than individuals in the control group. These essential oils have been shown to improve the mood while promoting a higher sense of relaxation.

Reducing Stress and Sadness

Feelings of sadness and stress can often worsen health. To combat these symptoms, individuals can use essential oils like lemon, orange, lavender, sandalwood and bergamot. These oils have been shown to reduce feelings of sadness, stress and anxious feelings. It is often believed that aromatherapy helps promote relaxation as well as treat many physical and mental conditions from burns to insomnia and depression. According to WebMD, there is limited scientific evidence to support claims that aromatherapy effectively prevents or cures illness.

As part of using aromatherapy to relax, meditation also plays an important role. Inhaling essential oils brings oxygen to the brain and creates alertness. By taking the time to find a scent or oil that you enjoy, you will be able to bring peace to your mind and put yourself in that meditative frame of mind.

Restoring the Nervous System

One of the essential oils that reappears constantly as a calm remedy is lavender. This essential oil is known for its relaxing, calming effect.  It helps to restore the nervous system to a calmer, more relaxed state. As a result, individuals can alleviate problems like nervous stomachs, irritability, and anxious feelings. When lavender essential oil was used in a study, it was shown to help people relax about going to the dentist.

Uplifting the Mood

Instead of removing stress, some remedies work by boosting the mood level. Ylang ylang is known for removing fearfulness and boosting optimism. It does this by calming agitation and nervous feelings. Ylang ylang is also known for working to relax, which makes it ideal for soothing the mind. Using ylang ylang on a daily basis has been shown to reduce the effects of stress.

Different Options with Aromatherapy

Chamomile oil is known for helping to reduce anxious feelings and stress. It helps to boost inner harmony while reducing problems with over-thinking. Chamomile tea is also known for being relaxing due to its calming and peaceful scent.

Aromatherapy can help alleviate stress and aid relaxation. From burning a candle to using an essential oil body wash, you can use these oils to help boost your inner well-being and relaxation.
