Have you ever flown a kite, perhaps as a child or as a parent with your child? If so, do you remember how exciting it is when the kite takes flight, catches the wind and begins to soar upward toward the heavens? Once you become familiar with the formula that allows your kite to fly successfully, you begin to master the art of flying. You keep your string taut so that the resistance from the wind allows the pressure to keep it stable and remain in flight. You gradually release more string, working with the play of resistance and navigate your kite higher and higher.
Imagine if the string were to break. Your kite would have no resistance to play off of and it would lose its dynamic pressure necessary to remain stable and in flight. It would recklessly twist and turn and the wind would crush it into pieces as it eventually tumbled to the ground meeting its demise.
Let’s look at this example as a metaphor for our lives. As we grow and expand in our life endeavors, quite often we wish to soar beyond our past limits and go beyond where we’ve been before. It’s part of human nature to excel beyond our past accomplishments, being led by an innate calling to constantly expand to new heights.
However, sometimes we forget that we need a cord or string tied around our waist to serve as an anchor, keeping us grounded in Spirit and reason while we soar into unimaginable heights. In literal terms, this cord could be a daily meditation practice or a weekly yoga class. It might be an accountability partner that you speak with weekly who serves as a mirror in reminding you whether you’re staying on course or veering into dangerous, uncharted waters.
Without keeping our chord taut via certain disciplines, we will likely spin out of control and be at the mercy of the prevailing winds of change, bringing forth outcomes such as depression, confusion, isolation, and a multitude of addictions. We must remember that the tension created from our taut cord might not feel comfortable, and often isn’t, but the stretching that’s required keeps us strong and limber while navigating the winds amidst the higher stratosphere of our life’s purpose. The pressure keeps us strong.
We see that it’s not simply a matter of how high we fly, but how well we learn to navigate amidst the tension in our whirlwind world, recognizing the friction as an ally that supports us in soaring beyond where we’ve ever imagined possible.
