I can't breathe, because the news and propaganda show me something that isn't the full story to keeps the masses steered in the "right" direction. Let them blow off a little steam through a few protests and it'll all die down in a bit...
I can't breathe because I have kept my mouth shut wanting people to like me while what I really want to do is point out the elephant in the room.
I can't breathe, because pointing out the obvious "other side of the coin" is not popular, it isn't "nice". It's often considered negative and pessimistic.
I can't breathe because I live in a society that feels it's entitled to comfort and unfettered happiness and play without wanting to see that these can come with a staggering price tag.
Sometimes, truth isn't convenient. We want what we want when we want. We want happiness and joy and a life of ease. We shun discomfort. We point fingers and place blame and judgment because it's inconceivable that we ourselves could be part of the problem. We take specific events, blow them up and don't reflect that these individual situations are symptoms of a collective malaise.
Sometimes, the true reality we are living is anything but easy yet alone convenient. But, we continue to spin the truth even if we witness otherwise through video cameras or our own eyes. We continue to sweep difficult realities under the collective carpet. We can just deal with it later...
Well, that collective carpet is getting extremely lumpy.
The other day, I saw a news story about how Hong Kong has now erected clear, blue sky backdrops so that tourists can have a "pretty" picture of the city's skyline instead of posing in front of it's smog ridden skies.
Why do we deny the obvious? Is it too painful for us to face a truth that our planet, our way of living and even the future of humanity is in serious trouble?
Do we think that it will just all work out when we turn our heads and continue business as usual?
Do we think that if we just love enough, intend enough and vision board enough that everything will "just shift"?
We like to hold hope that "someone else", our governments, our neighbor, the corporations, or even the intentions and prayers sent to a higher power will take responsibility and fix things for us. We take a pill to calm the anxiety and depression. We have a drink to dull our senses. We shop. We post inspirational quotes and pictures to Facebook. We zone out with our technology. We avoid the news. Everything is OK...
Yes, there are two sides to every coin. There is joy and peace and generosity and laughter. There are breathtaking sunsets and grand beauty in tiny flowers. There are giggling babies and frisky puppies. All are wonderful and bring us joy. But, we have become imbalanced by choosing to acknowledge only a more desirable "positive" experience. The Universe strives for balance and sometimes that means swinging the pendulum to the opposite extreme to achieve it.
Our earth has become imbalanced and is showing its attempt to rebalance though more and more extreme climate events. Quietly, the news stories dribble into awareness and are overshadowed by more popular and sensational news stories. Where are the conversations about our climate predicament? The consequences of climate change don't discriminate. We all need clean air, water and food. Increasingly, these very basics are becoming harder to obtain and more precious than ever. Who will we be and become when our very existence and survival depends upon the "equitable" distributions of these resources? No one is exempt from the effects of climate change. There is no one individual or institution to blame for a future that is coming which is more than inconvenient. We all participate in creating our collective experiences. And, we all suffer the consequences of turning a blind eye to the signs that are right in front of our faces.
What will happen when we all can’t breathe? Who will we choose to be and act when pushed to our own edges in the face of requiring basic survival necessities? These are questions that we need to start considering now. We need to look at the current events in our greater world with the intention of seeing a greater story and the collective truth that we are all in this together…that equality, justice and basic human survival effects each and everyone one of us despite our differences in race, gender, economic standing, political affiliation or religion.
