Abstract: We all set out with good intentions in life, with the idea that our lives will be a perfect painting for all to see. However, that is never the case. Pain, hurt, trauma, and storms come in and disrupt us from painting that perfect life we wish for ourselves. But, we all have the strength to continue painting through the rain, and even though our masterpiece might be stained, it will be truly ours, something that we created.
“Painting in the Rain” is a song on the album Camouflage by Canadian-Belgian singer Lara Fabian on her 13th studio album. The song sees Fabian going out to paint a picture only to be interrupted by a storm, yet determined to finish, she continues paint, despite the storm. Fabian sings she wants to create a “masterpiece of stains, painting my heart out, out in the rain.”
How many of us have set out in life with the best intentions, ready to take on the world, only to have something completely shake our world that makes us rethink everything? When Fabian sings about painting through the storms, isn’t that what life really comes down to? This year has shown us how strong we can be when we come together. Just through the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movements alone, we have been forced to not only reflect about how our actions can cause both physical and emotional trauma, but physically change how we interact with one another.
But not all change happens on a world stage, most happens on an individual level, within the walls of our own homes. Many of us have started careers, relationships, and any other number of commitments, only to realize that with time our decisions no longer fit with what we want for our future. Some are lucky and realize this on their own and can make a quick break. Others must go through some sort of trauma to realize that what they truly want is something other than where they are currently. When the rain starts to fall though, we have two choices: continue to paint our own story or retreat and let others paint it for us.
We all have trauma in our lives. Some we can see through scars and bruises, others are more hidden through depression, anxiety, and other disorders. No one is escaping this life without something happening to them. But how we respond to the pain, the trauma, is what makes us. Unfortunately, life is not like a beautiful painting hanging in a museum where each brush stroke is meticulously thought out and perfectly placed. We must create the “masterpiece of stains” that Fabian sings about. And thankfully we have come to the right place to help us all cope.
Creating our own masterpiece, even though it might seem the world is against us, is not an insurmountable task. Within each of us is the drive to continue fighting for what we truly want in life, and when it seems like we have no fight left, we can tap into the strength of our kindred spirits through meditation, reiki, and crystal healing, just to name a few. But through these struggles, we are able to say that we have created our own masterpiece, despite its flaws and imperfections. No one can take that away from us.
