Recovering from an Auto Accident? How Yoga Can Help

An auto accident can happen when you least expect it and can leave you with lasting physical and emotional damage. For most serious auto accident victims, recovery is a drawn-out and difficult process. Those who used to love being physically active and working out often have to scale it back and can even feel depressed and withdrawn without the physical activity. Yoga is one of the ways that you can work your way back into physical and emotional shape. Once your body is ready, you can do some simple and non-strenuous yoga stretches and poses to help you reclaim your strength.

1. It Can Ease the Pain of Whiplash

We often think of whiplash as being one of the least horrible injuries that can be sustained in an auto accident. However, whiplash can be painful and make any pre-existing pain problems worse. Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissue in the neck, so you won't want to do any shoulder-stands or whip your head quickly while getting into a cobra or cobra variation pose. Take it slow and steady, and if a move causes the pain to worsen, it's okay to back out of that pose.

2. It Can Rebuild Core Strength

If you have been out-of-commission for several weeks or even months due to an auto accident, your core strength has probably diminished. Once your doctor can confirm that you are healed enough to start doing yoga, try some core-building moves. Some of the best basic yoga poses for core strength are the Chair Pose (Utkatasana), Warrior 1, and Plank (Phalakasana). Don't go into these poses expecting to do them perfectly; it will take time to rebuild your strength. Again, if anything causes you more pain, back out of it and take time to rest.

3. It Can Help Ease Spine and Pelvic Pain

Spinal and pelvic injuries are common among auto accident victims. These injuries can take a while to heal, but once your body is ready, you can start doing simple stretches to open up your shoulders and hips and lengthen your back. Forward folds, shoulder-openers, seated spinal twists, and cat-cow can help to alleviate pain harbored in damaged muscle tissue left over from injuries. A lot of these exercises are relatively simple, can be found in online instructional videos, and can be done in the comfort of your home.

4. It Can Ease Stress

One of the best benefits of yoga is that it is a phenomenal way to relieve stress and combat anxiety and depression! If you've been in an auto accident, chances are that you might be taking legal action against an at-fault driver. Having an auto injury attorney on your side can help with the financial and legal stress. At home, however, yoga can help you deal with the mental, emotional, and physical manifestations of stress related to your accident. Yoga allows you to reconnect with your body and your breath, drawing your focus inward. At the end of each routine, you can lie still on your back with your palms turned upward and Savasana.

There are many benefits to yoga for those recovering from an auto accident. If you have been in an accident, you might want to check in with your doctor to see if they think you are ready to try some yoga to help relieve the pain and stress. Your body might just thank you for it!
