We mostly shy away from pain and the sordid realities of so many people’s lives, preferring to sweep them under the carpet while we immerse ourselves in diversions that occupy or numb the mind. That’s not just self-centeredness, it’s a basic misunderstanding of how we are all connected – who we are.
A significant proportion of the population of this planet has never been really happy. Never; not even for one moment! Isn’t that sad? They may have been contented from time to time, but I’m talking about being supremely happy – filled with hope, optimism and positive energy. Do you understand that so many of those alive on the planet today have no love in their lives and are not even wanted, victims perhaps of broken families, financial deprivation, conflict or just callous indifference?
Can you visualize a barefoot girl, not more than six or seven, her skin streaked with dirt and dressed only in a filthy T shirt – no shoes or slippers? No anything. And she pokes at garbage with a stick in the hope of finding something to eat or perhaps sell. I saw her last week, her dull eyes indicative of her feeling of utter and complete hopelessness in a world that knew nothing of her existence and didn’t care anyway.
Can you comprehend the absolute terror and fear that so many children have to live with – those involved collaterally in the wars that are constantly being fought around the world? “Our” wars. Do you recognize how poverty can be so grinding, so degrading, and so all consuming that a mother would kill her own children before killing herself in order to save them from starvation – a last act of love? I read that in the newspaper this morning and wept quietly for our inadequacies as a species. It wasn’t an isolated incident.
Do you know how many of our children are bullied at school just because they’re “different”? A lot. But can you actually feel the sheer dread that these bullied children endure? The pain is unbearable – day after day after day. No wonder some are driven to suicide. And do you understand why these children are bullied? It’s very important that you do. You must!
To call ourselves a civilized species is a gross misnomer, for we are not. Not even close. God works, it is said, in mysterious ways, but it is us - we work in mysterious ways. We usually have empathy from a distance but can you really conceive of what it’s actually like to live in pain, fear, degradation and squalor each day? Every day. Year in and year out for your entire life. Many do, and you have to face that fact because as a human being you are involved in the process: you are connected.
