Serene Science: is There a Right Way to Meditate?

Meditation is often a personal experience. It involves connecting with your inner wisdom and thoughts instead of relying on logical reasoning. In fact, meditation at its best, is a departure from the type of critical thinking that we are used to engaging in on a daily basis. While there are different methods of meditation that might be better suited for some people more than others, the primary goal of any meditation is to encourage a deeper personal connection. If you are starting your own personal meditation journey, here are some tips for making your sessions more successful.

Concentration

This method of meditation requires you to focus all your thoughts and energy on one point. One of the ways to practice this technique is to watch a single object for a certain period of time. When you first try out this method, it may be difficult to focus for long periods of time. You can increase your time spent on concentration as you become more familiar with this method. 

Mindfulness of Thoughts

Instead of trying to clear your mind of all thoughts, this method allows the practitioner to embrace any random thought that comes to mind. The practitioner is not encouraged to dwell on any single thought because the purpose is not to evaluate individual ideas. The difficulty with this meditation method is that we often have a tendency to make quick judgment calls about our thoughts and experiences and see them through a particular lens. Try to empty your mind of emotions and let the thoughts you have just pass you by. You might be surprised to see what you think about most.

Walking Meditation

This method of meditation involves walking in silence to engage in a mindful connection with your thoughts. This is a more advanced method of meditation because it may be difficult to avoid distractions from the natural surroundings. It is generally recommended that this technique be introduced after a student of meditation has engaged in a thorough practice of concentration and mindfulness of thoughts. 

Breath Awareness Meditation

This practice involves a heavy focus on breath and patterns of breathing. During practice, the practitioner should be entirely clued into the act of breathing. You may notice sensations around you in a more pronounced way because your mind is quieted from focusing on your breath. It is perfectly acceptable for your thoughts to start to drift, as long as you continue to focus on your breathing pattern. An essential component of this method of meditation is a physical stillness. Aside from breathing, the rest of your body should remain as still as possible.

Meditation is a physical and mental practice that requires considerable study and time investment from students at all levels of experience.
