Steiner’s Meta-Sensory and Synchronicity: the Soul’s Invitation for Seeking Truth and Higher Vision

Description: We need intuition, inner-knowing, and self-acceptance now more than ever in an age when information comes faster than the speed of light. Historical figure and visionary Rudolph Steiner explored the soul’s invitation for higher vision by using his concept ‘intuitive thought’. Understanding this concept we uncover his secrets of the soul, which holds universal knowledge and deep personal revelatory insights, for navigating the truth of our inner and outer worlds. This article guides readers to his three stages of intuitive self-development teachings while seeking higher vision.

Rudolph Steiner the father of the Waldorf Education movement described intuition as thinking consciousness, a clarity separate from reasoning or rational thought, which nowadays we might call Meta-Sensory. The Meta-Sensory experience coupled with synchronicity is the soul’s distinctive call to expand consciousness, reaching our highest potential. Our modern standards of advanced information access, commerce at our fingertips, and quick fixes have come at a cost. The language of the soul is lost and buried under the morass of excess in an instant. Steiner was a researcher of the soul whose influence in the realm of spiritual perception withstood the test of time. Following his teachings we will remember and embrace that we are spiritual beings having a human experience.

Steiner was a highly sensitive person (HSP) who learned from an early age what we see, feel, and hear vary quite markedly from others experience of the same situation. Steiner experienced unique spiritual and atypical forms of perception which he sought to demystify through education, knowledge, and a lifelong pursuit of a deeper connection with the spiritual self – a place he believed was central to living a life of personal freedom. In Steiner’s own words, “Intuitive thinking is a spiritual path.”

What is Meta-Sensory?

Meta, meaning beyond, describes our higher senses or senses just beyond our normal physical senses. Through the meta-senses we experience the primordial reality, non-local consciousness, or the meta-conscious. Modern science defines meta-cognition as “cognition about cognition”, thinking about thinking, or our higher ordered thinking faculties.

When used in spiritual context, meta-consciousness provides the nexus for understanding Steiner’s groundbreaking concept of intuitive thought, what he called Intuitive Thinking.  He considered intuition a higher form of cognition which was possible to achieve, but was susceptible to distortion and also separation. In intuitive thinking there are spiritual senses which we perceive non-linear reality with, such as clairvoyance, telepathy, and inner knowing which are not yet integrated into rational thought. They come from outside the normal range of experience, but also stem from within. Steiner also believed through our tendency for reliance upon logical, linear, and rational thought there has been a severe cost to humanity, spiritual perception. In his philosophy, intuitive thinking was independent thinking, not only from words, but from the physical body and brain, but rooted in the spiritual sensory experience.

Meta-senses are the faculties we use just outside our normal range of perception to understand and perceive safety, see further into reality, and gain deeper knowledge from our environment (including cues about others) so we may use what we need in furthering our own self-development and evolution.

Our thinking/cognition and emotions/feelings are directly affected by what we sense; hear/telepathy, see/clarity/vision, taste (sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, salty and astringent), smell, and touch.  Steiner furthered the focus on our traditional sensory experience by including concepts such as mental pictures, imaginative cognition, inspiration, and will.

The Intuitive Stages

Steiner encouraged a meditative path for increasing intuition. We first wait for our invitation a strong synchronistic experience, which signals our initiation into spiritual development.  This is our soul’s call to begin the journey inward through self-development.  Using synchronicity as a guidepost, we take serious action steps to learn more. Once a level is achieved we receive another synchronicity and then wait for more synchronistic events to signal us forward. Self-development and strong morality were both Steiner's way to learn and grow into higher vision, clarity, and intuition.

Here are his three starting points for unlocking the unique spiritual senses. He invites us to learn through imaginative cognition first by exploring further outside our typical sensory or organ’s perception through intensified concentration and relaxation. The ancients used mantras, Carl Jung used symbolism and archetypes, and many eastern religions use meditation as a means of achieving this higher consciousness. Pick one of these forms and make time each day to focus on them in quiet, meditative reflection. Observe the qualities of your own mind. This is the first step in developing awareness and self-control over thoughts and the process of thinking. The point is to observe and learn the patterns of thought in the mind, through conscious awareness. It is also a coupling of initiative to stay focused, present, and continue regular practice which primes the mind for work.

Through inspiration we make changes which enhance our health through body, mind, and spirit. We eliminate all that are not positive and good for our spiritual advancement. We then consciously choose meditative content which opens up a new and different reality. Our body, mind, spirit must be primed and ready for this journey. High vibrational foods and nutrients are needed for the expenditure of energy that is required and to be able to discern new thought forms. Using visualization we see the positive aspects in everything which helps increase inspiration and divine thought.

The stage of intuition is achieved through practicing exercises of will. The idea behind achieving this level of intuitive thought is to use solid moral judgement, developing strength and trust in one’s ability to make a decision, and understanding the inner-nature of each individual or creature we come in contact with. As we shed old thought patterns and begin forging a true balance between awakened thought and will, we advance automatically into intuitive thought. This process continues further through spiritual development which means uncovering who we really are and going boldly in that direction. As we do so, synchronicity increases if we are on purpose and keeping with our intentions. They are our sign post from our soul to continue our quest, providing a pat on the back that our intuition and meta-senses are growing stronger.

Finally, developing gratitude for all the experiences we are drawn to and that we encounter. Challenges that arise are really opportunities to discern the meaning of not only the moment, but life itself.
