When we hit-bottom we are in a perfect place to begin again because there is nothing left to hold us back or keep us down. As cohost with Kelly Sullivan Walden of the radio show Dreams Unzipped we discussed tips and shared tales of Tears to Triumph offered by world-renowned guest Marianne Williamson.
As children we may have had physical growing pains. Expanding limbs can create cramps, and aches. Adult growing pains are of a different sort but as important. They are emotional.
A child’s arms weighted down with toys are replaced by mature hearts overburdened with the past.
When a toy disappeared we felt as though a piece of ourselves was gone. This can be traumatic enough to change sleep patterns. A lost adult relationship can do much the same and create emotional phantom pain. So, how can we move from tears to triumph?
One answer is Mirror therapy used to help alleviate phantom limb pain from amputation. It can be modified to reestablish a connection with self to find the lost pieces of our life.
Mirror Box Therapy is an occupational therapy invented by Vilayanur S. Ramachandran in which two mirrors in the center of a box (one facing each way) helps alleviate phantom limb pain from an amputated limb.
How can similar therapies treat dissimilar ailments when one is physical and the other is emotional?
Modified Mirror therapy discussed in detail during the radio show is a method to find and reconnect with what is truly important in life- you. It is an emotional therapeutic technique to reassess priorities. It is difficult to ignore or embellish on the truth when we look ourselves in the eye.
When a part of our spirit is lost we experience phantom soul pain. Journaling is a means of measurement for improvement.
The goal of Modified Mirror therapy is to reestablish a connection with self through the windows of our soul; the eyes. Any mirror can accomplish this goal and is easy enough to do daily at home.
Brushing teeth, combing hair or getting dressed is the perfect opportunity to use mirror therapy. These three questions can help get the process started.
1.) “When was my life the happiest?” Joy felt during the memory spotlights the lost.
2.) “How can my happiness be reestablished now?” Excitement from the question reestablishes the joyful connection by formulating a plan.
3.) “How can my joy be kept safe?” The answer to this question is an emotional protection mechanism.
Modified mirror therapy is a bit like stepping through the Looking Glass into Alice’s Wonderland. If we dare to ask, “How far down this darned rabbit hole filled with tears do I have to go?” Don’t be surprised if a voice from behind the windows of your soul answers, “How far down do you want to go? It’s your journey.”
The more connected we are with our inner-selves the quicker we may find our missing parts and tears will turn to triumph.
