Balance……how many times a day we hear that word!! Balance work with pleasure, positive with negative, anger with peace. It’s an endless list of polarities, and to live our lives harmoniously, we must tip the scales to find our center.
As the Sun begins its journey through the constellation of Libra, our thoughts may be about that which brings us harmony and peace, both personally and globally. With all the “talk” bombarding us these days, it seems as though harmony and peace are words that have vanished from the English language, as has diplomacy and truth!! So how do we stay centered in our truth? What does it mean to balance, and how and where do we stay balanced in our own peace? How do we live in harmony?
Compromise, for one. Ghandi, a Libran, made many compromises to bring about a new India, returning India to its people in a non-violent manner. He once said “An eye for an eye makes the whole World blind.” Peacefully, he brought about change by balancing the scales using his strong principles and diplomacy in an attempt to bring harmony.
We face this same compromising daily in our relationships. Married or in partnerships and in our everyday interactions with people, we have to compromise for the sake of them. Relationship implies two. Therefore, both parties compromise to reach the core nature of the relationship itself. You each sacrifice something to have harmony.
Relationships in any form are key to our self-discovery and understanding. It is through them that we learn to give and receive, to compromise, to sacrifice. Our partners, and equally our enemies, are actually mirror reflections of what is contained within ourselves. If there is something we see within a person we do not like, it may be a message to us of something we ourselves either need to change or develop. Libra, ruling the 7th house of relationships, partnerships, public relations and justice, is an energy that asks us to explore ourselves through our personal relationships and those with the World so that we may find balance and harmony in our lives.
Those born under the sign of Libra have often been unfairly judged as being indecisive. Yes…they can be, but there is a justifiable reason (Libra is about justice, as well) It’s about opposites! Yes, opposites! Libra’s energy recognizes that you cannot have one without the other. There cannot be an entrance without an exit, winning without losing, truth without deceit. How would we know of truth if there wasn’t deceit to measure it against? There will always be the opposite side of the coin.
In astrology there are signs that oppose one another. An example being Aries and Libra. Aries is the warrior, aggressive energy, action, and Libra the peacemaker seeking harmony and diplomacy. Aries can very much benefit from the peacefulness of Libra to soothe their fire nature, and Libra can benefit from the action of Aries. Virgo and Pisces. Virgo with their analytical and practical mind helps to ground the dreaminess of Pisces, and in return, Pisces adds imagination to Virgo. Opposites are strongly attracted to one another as they feel mutual respect and admiration for the other. They desire what the other has and so learn compromise for the sake of harmony and balance. This is a reason for Libra’s indecisiveness. Using their keen intellect to discern, they tip the scales of justice to balance the two possible extreme results knowing that all WILL balance out in time.
So it is with all aspects of life. In order to create balance and peace, we must learn to integrate opposites for a better understanding of the natural laws of life to create wholeness within ourselves. How do we know to create balance if there isn’t imbalance? How can we know how to be humble if we didn’t know what arrogance looks like? How do we create peace if we don’t know what conflict feels like? It is the Wisdom of the Open Heart.
And then there is the aesthetic and social beauty of Libra as Venus’ (Libra’s ruler) child. Rarely will you find a Libra who is not well-dressed, perfumed, with a most melodic-sounding voice preparing to socialize with friends, singing at the top of their voice in their car as they travel to their destination to go have some fun! They love the arts; music, sculpture, fashion…..anything that beautifies! And let’s not forget love! Love is beauty. Libra LOVES to love. Elvis Costello wrote in a song, “What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding?” Nothing when we embrace the energy of Venus and Libra.
What does this month mean for us as this energy prevails? It’s a good time to bring our focus on relationships, aesthetics, both personal and environmental, and on balancing our lives. All things, good and bad, are there to assist us in centering ourselves which is truly the only way to reach harmony. Every person we meet is there to reflect what we may need to address in ourselves in order to grow. Pay attention. Let go of ego in relationships and then compromise. What are they mirroring back to us? Where do we need to beautify? Is it our home, ourselves, our attitude?
Yoga…..oh, yoga!! Performing balancing asanas with focus allows us to find our center, not only our physical center but our inner; the heart, solar plexus, third eye. Find it and listen. What needs to change for us to create harmony in relationships and in the world around us? When doing inversions notice opposites. When practicing Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog) bring to mind its opposite, Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (up dog). When doing Adho Mukha Vrksasana (headstand), think about it’s opposite Tadasana (mountain pose). Performing Sun Salutations, bow to the North, South, East, West imagining the opposite ends of their vertical and horizontal lines.
And have fun!!! Socialize! Bring it to the heart telling yourself you are in balance and harmony with the natural flow of life.
