It probably happens to most of us at times of our lives, that a vague feeling of unhappiness - a feeling of emptiness appears even when we are doing well in the practical world, and we can’t find the reason for it! It can be frustrating, but it can also be a good sign! Because it may mean that a healthy mind is looking for a deeper satisfaction and happiness in life, but it doesn’t know how to find it. And time is passing!
I had the same unhappy feelings intermittently in my life, starting in my senior high school years, in India. It even made me leave my home periodically, chasing "holy men", and looking for answers. But I wasn’t lucky to find them, and had to put my lingering thoughts in the back burner, and focus my attention on my education.
After graduation, while I was doing my post-graduate studies in Electronics in the USA, those old vague feelings of unhappiness started to haunt me more frequently. They became more intense while I was doing my doctoral degree in Computer Science at George Washington University in Washing, DC. It distracted me so much that I decided to take a break from my studies, and dropped out of my course. I started to do some freelance photography while exploring the source of my nagging thoughts.
Once I was standing on a riverbank. It was a real wide, and slow moving river with many inlets. I was standing on one of those inlets. The water next to me was full of debris, made of lots of small logs, probably created by storms. I saw that most of them were bouncing into each other, becoming range bound, and forming a stagnant pool, but some of them avoided hitting into each other, and oriented themselves in the direction of the main flow, in the cleaner water, and started to move with the river.
What is life’s natural flow ? What is its direction ? How do we find it ? What is its link to happiness ? Can we find more happiness in life, if we can orient ourselves in the direction of life’s natural flow ?The answers may lie in some basic logical clues of life, which have been there all along, in front of our eyes - we just didn’t see them!
I think there is a lot more happiness waiting for us to be claimed in our lives, when we understand those clues, and act accordingly! These clues are absolute - satisfy both Science and Religion. They are also very simple - anybody with natural instinct can follow them, no special education needed. They may also be timeless - applicable from the early years of human civilization to the space age!
We will discuss about these clues in my next post. Love you all ! Om !
