No one is exempt from trying times. On more than a few occasions, I have been pushed to my limit. Once or twice, I have been pushed beyond. So, why do some people focus while others fold in the mist of the storm?

Being a retired crisis counselor of 20 years, I had the benefit of a front row seat watching people endure the worst that life has to offer. As fate would have it, I entered the hardest years of my life in my mid 40's to early 50's. I think the blessing is all those years of watching my clients battle through their hardships, those lesson were not lost on me. And, it is these strategies that both personally and professionally I would recommend, should you find yourself in the storm.

1.The first thing to do is remember that storms don't last forever. No matter what you're going through, it will end or you will. Either way the storm will no longer affect you.

2. Don't stop doing the things that bring you happiness. When the storm rages, we have a tendency to isolate or over work. Believe it or not, sometimes it is best to let the storm rage. Your job is not to compete with it. It is to out last it.

3. Don't take it as a loss. Take it as a lesson. No need to beat yourself up over a bad run. It happens to us all. Do the smart thing and learn from it.

I have a friend who lost everything and declared bankruptcy twice in a matter of years. He gained 50 pounds and went home to live with his mother. He is now one of the most successful people I know. HE MADE A CHOICE TO SEE THE LESSON.

4. Pray, meditate or just work on staying positive. My goal is all 3, but the point here is not to focus on what is going wrong in your life. But what is going right.

5. Self-care is your savior. I have watched so many clients {and friends} turn to reckless behaviors during trying times. Over indulging in things that they shouldn't be. The last thing you need is to run down your body on top of a stressful situation. Be mindful of what you are consuming.

While I embrace the saying "there is always, always something to be grateful for", I am realistic and know that it does not always feel that way. Someday's you'll just need a good cry. Other days you may want to fold completely. It's a trap. Your mindset is the most powerful tool you have while sailing the stormy seas. And I personally know sometimes all you can do is manage the next 15 minutes. That's okay. Break it down to small task if you have too. Keep trusting. Keep trying. Keep learning.

Remember the best version of you is waiting on the other side of the storm.

Hi,Vance.  I'm one of the  OmTimes editors.   I wanted to let you know that the magazine policy doesn't permit first person articles.  If you can turn it into a third person piece, it would have a better chance of publication. Thanks.
