The Paths We Walk

There is a popular and humorous meme that states, “I took the road less traveled, now where the Hell am I”? What does it mean to take the road less traveled? Does it mean that we are more adventurous, courageous and curious about life, we want to live it our own way? Living life here on Earth most definitely requires courage. Forging our own path can be difficult. We can feel pressured by tradition or family members and friends who want us to live life as they do. We can develop fear of being criticized and judged. We can incarnate here much different from what others consider to be ‘normal’ and spend our lives trying to fit in or break free and live on our own terms.

Fear of the unknown can cause us to stay in ‘life limbo’ as well. Dreaming of what we could do or might do in the future but never taking the steps to realize those dreams into reality. The need for acceptance or approval can hold us back from what we truly want to express. We look for others who shine like us and want to live life as we do. Together we can feel empowered. We then begin to realize it is through expression of clarity that the others find us.

There are wonderful, eclectic people in the world who live alternate lifestyles who entertain us with their comedy, sincerity and light! Many of those people had to break down barriers in order to be heard, seen and felt. They may have experienced the judgment of family and friends but kept on going no matter the challenge. Their inspiration and determination is an example for all of us to be true to ourselves and our purposes in life. There are literally millions of books to read, places to explore, people to meet out there who help us shape our intelligence as we grow into life. How we see the world is so important in how we look at our own lives. We can see it as an exciting adventure in which we are painting a beautiful landscape on a canvas or a dark and scary place that keeps us living in fear.

If our spirituality has been based on generations of family members following a certain religion it can really shake things up when we begin to question their validity. It can cause us to feel anxious and alone. In time, by educating ourselves in learning about other cultures and beliefs, we can find peace and comfort in living life on our own terms. If our lifestyle is not compatible with what others consider to be acceptable, we gain strength when we let go of the need to fit in. We begin to celebrate what makes us ‘different’ and we rise above the bigotry, negativity and harmful ideals.

When we are able to break free from the need to follow like herded sheep, we are able to let in new thought and inspirations. That freedom is what has allowed humankind to invent, discover and shine a light where there was darkness. We can develop our creative muscles and find strength in breaking through the barriers which hold so many back. We can find our voices when others remain silent, challenging what has always been done. Then we evolve and grow in our own right!

It’s not about forcing others to follow our spiritual beliefs, religions or lifestyles. It’s about love and acceptance for ourselves and for others to be free to live the life they know is true, what is real for them. It’s about being good human beings, reaching out to help, understanding that we really are all in this together. True freedom means we are able to live in peace with compassion and empathy no matter which path we are on.
