There have been many studies showing that animals and plants do have consciousness. Such as the study of brine shrimp being poured into hot water and a plant in another room vibrating with stress that was recorded on instruments. The plant had a connection to the shrimp and reacted when they were killed... that must be some type of compassion.
Many a dog has saved his master from death. A man was out duck hunting and stepped into a deep water filled hole and was about to drown, but his dog went looking for him and dragged him out just in time... great compassion without thinking of himself... he could have drown too.
There was a little kitten that would not eat. But a crow came along and befriended the kitten and started bringing food, and for some reason the kitten would eat food from the crow. They stayed together for weeks until the kitten was strong and started eating on it's own, they even played together and seemed to know one another. The crow did not have to do that... it got nothing in return... again we find compassion and unconditional love.
Many a dolphin has saved someone out in the ocean from sharks and kept them from harm. They don't have to do that, they could keep going on their merry way and do nothing, but instead they chase off the sharks. The dolphin gets nothing out of this... other than the fact that they feel and have compassion and love just like we do.
There are many film documented animals love stories, some showing lions taking care of gazelle fauns, and hippos befriending a tortoise and many more.
Sai Baba said and I paraphrase: There is nothing in the whole Universe that does not respond to love.
We have so much to learn about compassion and unconditional love from animals.
All we have to do is open our eyes and let go of our ego... for we are not the only ones that can love.
