“We all face death. Few face life”

Its easy to see once you are beginning to awaken the futile efforts of the many who run their lives in unconscious delusion and keep getting the same results over and over again. Equally its also easy to see the upward climb of those who align with the divine nature that exists in the universe and how their lives are rewarded for doing so.

That road is becoming more popular and in fact its becoming obligatory. We all can see that our planet is sick if not dying. We can all see that our political system fails to deliver a healthy food or medical system that is not profit driven. So a moment of awareness leads to one conclusion. There must be more than accepting the status quo as an individual, if we are to see global change.

Once that awareness dawns as we begin the path its obvious that to change the world I must be the change to paraphrase Ghandi. My own personal journey to wake up was one that caused turmoil and at times the progress was slow but its a bit like peeling an onion. Once you accept that there is going to be times you wish you had stayed asleep,  then you can keep moving forward. The alternative is to accept the egos solution which is what gets us into trouble in the first place. So at an individual level what do you need to do to awaken?

The Tao Te Ching the ancient 3500 year old sacred document, has some advice:-

Tao exists in one’s own true self.

It cannot be found outside of one’s true nature.

Hence, there is no need to leave the house to take journey in order to know the world.

The Tao is the real self within as distinct to the ego which exists within you. The essence of awakening is to bring the real self to the fore rather than remain unconscious and allow the ego to determine what you will do. What do I mean?

Your life can be divided into five areas. Health, wealth, your work or business, your relationships and the one with yourself. Let me pose the question in each of these. What do you need to do in each area to be better? Second question would be. Do you have all the skills necessary in each of those areas to be better? No? Then you need to acquire them.

In the area of Wealth, if you spend too much and cant save money then find someone to help you with the skills and the behavioral change necessary to make it happen. Knowledge is one thing but actioning it, is another. We all know too much chocolate is a bad thing but if you are overweight you know stopping is the real issue. That’s where knowledge about the ego is important. If you don’t know what the ego is, find out. It is the major reason we eat too much, spend too much, cannot get on with other people and don’t really know or love ourselves.

Many lack the awareness of the real self and the ego. It is only through wanting the change from being asleep that awareness slowly arises. Its like the rising of  a new day; as it begins, it gradually gets brighter. Awareness comes to those who are prepared to be different, then test that difference against how the majority are living. Which works better, which makes me happier and more peaceful? As Buddha said we must all find our own way by testing what works for us individually. He didn't say follow me. He said, find your own way.

Sometimes its all too easy to follow another, than go down the road less travelled. Initially you will need to find a master, a teacher or guru to assist you in the right direction but after the apprenticeship, you must strike out on your own and lead the way yourself. That is the road to mastery, awakening and enlightenment. No one else can take you down that road. Only your real self knows the road you must travel.

Mastery of ego leads to us changing the world. Once we are all masters of ego then we will all want change in the world. The change has to begin with us. Start working on yourself today. This is the essence of selfless action spoken of in the Bhagavad Gita, one of the ancient Hindu vedic texts.

Further, having regard to thy own duty, thou shouldst not waver, for there is nothing higher ……..  than a righteous war.

This is one war we all need to win.

Hi Brett,

Thanks for expanding on this. Now that I have had a closer look, I have a few extra comments based on feedback that I recently received from the Senior Editor on other article submissions.

-  If you had to capture the gist of the article in one or two sentences, what would it be? We may need to reinforce this more in the title, the opening and a few times throughout the piece. The opening paragraphs make it sound like this piece is about breaking free from a profit-driven, capitalist structure whereas the bulk of the article goes into self-discovery and authenticity.

Either one of these would make good article topics - I guess my question is how do we link them together in the article, or would you rather choose one and develop that instead, etc.

- We're aiming for inclusive language and the first sentence could sound a bit like we are talking down to people who aren't "spiritually awake" - and who defines what "awake" is? Would you consider reworking the opening so that it leads with the benefits of following your path?

- Where you mention the Tao Te Ching, it's worth defining what Tao is as not everyone will know (or the line about the Tao existing in one's true self won't make sense, etc)

- There are a few sentences where I think you may have left out a word, and I'm not sure what you mean. Would you mind rereading it slowly (perhaps aloud) and double checking it? Here are a few examples: "It is only though wanting the change from be asleep that awareness slowly arises" or .. "Sometimes it’s all too easy to follow another, than go down the road less travelled." (rather than?) ... "If you spend too much and can’t save find someone to help you with the skills and the behavioral change necessary to make it happen." (I'm not sure what you mean with this last sentence, etc - is it about time being wasted, or not being able to find a solution).

- The quote at the beginning, is that yours? “We all face death. Few face life”

Thanks again for expanding on the article and I'm sorry I didn't make some of these comments earlier; they didn't click the first time I read the piece. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Brett,

Thank you for posting an original article, as per our suggestions last month. This piece is a bit shorter than our guidelines specify (700-1200 words), would you be able to expand on it?

As a reminder, these are the submission guidelines:

- Original content, in other words, it hasn't been posted in other magazines or in blogs.

- We are aiming for a professional tone of voice, using "we" rather than "I" to make the articles more inclusive, and to avoid sounding like a blog post. - Please include an Author Bio with links to your profile and any information (up to 60 words)

- Title reflective of the general theme (up to 60 characters)

- Article length: 700 to 1200 words

If you could also add your Author Bio at the end, that would be great.
