Thoughts are a very powerful form of energy. They come into our mind at random and overstay their welcome most of the time. They are truly like an uninvited guest in our home. Individually we have nothing at all to do with them, but the ego likes to stake a claim in them calling them our own. Thoughts however cannot be claimed by the individual because they are really just a form of energy that our minds are tapping into. It would be similar to turning our television to the Golf Channel and receiving information about golf. We don't own the channel or the information, we just chose to dial into that channel. We chose to tune into a particular channel because that is what we desired to watch and listen to.

What if we didn't have a choice though? What if our television was broken and selected the channels for us at random? What if one minute our television was showing golf, then the next minute it flipped to a cooking show, then only seconds later it switched to a soccer match, and so on? On top of that craziness, imagine that the television never turned off and we could never stop watching it. This is akin to what goes on in our minds the majority of the time. Instead of consciously choosing our thoughts the way we choose our television channels, we let our thoughts choose us. Furthermore, we give them free reign as to when they can show up and how long they can stay.

This is unhealthy because thoughts, whether we choose them or not, are the vehicle by which we create matter in the in the physical world. So if our thoughts are messy, scattered, and random, then guess what our physical reality will look like: messy, scattered, and random. If we want more choice in our experiences, then we must learn to choose our thoughts. Before we do that though, we need to learn to turn the whole system of thinking off entirely to clear the air. Otherwise, if we choose certain thoughts but in between those thoughts we are still tuning into random thoughts, the universe will be confused about what it is we wish to materialize.

Think of an Etch-a-Sketch (the little toy art easel with the magic screen). If we keep drawing picture over picture without ever shaking it to clear the screen what would it look like? It would be a mess and we wouldn't even be able to decipher what the original picture was. In order to clear our own thinking screens we need to engage in some kind of daily meditation or contemplation practice. We must quiet the relentless chatter of the mind either by intentionally silencing any thoughts that arise or by placing our attention on something and contemplating it. The more time we spend emptying the mind or clearing our screens the more clear our pictures become.

Having an untrained mind is like watching a broken television. It will hop around from topic to topic and channel to channel causing us great distress. Having a trained mind however is like watching a properly working television with a remote control. We can choose when to turn it on, when to turn it off, and when to change the channel. We can choose a channel that makes us laugh or we can choose a channel that makes us cry. We can choose channels that bring us love, peace, and happiness. And whenever we find that the noise is just too overwhelming, we can always reset the whole system with silence. It's true what they say in movie theaters: "Silence is golden."
