Did you know that the right side of your brain works in symbols and pictures? And did you know that the right side of the brain decodes those symbols and stimuli and that your body then responds by making the chemicals for emotions?
Archetypes are these symbols. By definition, archetypes are a universal form of symbol or energy pattern. When you think of Gods and Goddesses, animal totems, numbers and numerology, colors, or the planets and stars, you are actively thinking of archetypes.
Your subconscious mind responds to these symbols, or archetypes. Religious symbols are a great example of just how powerful symbols can be. Certain symbols can also make us respond viscerally. Know anyone who can ignore the emotional tug of a picture of a baby or a puppy? Or think of a particularly crazy dream you’ve had and your reaction immediately after waking up. You are responding to the symbology of the dream. Where else might archetypes show up?
Archetypes are a core component of our personality and make up. Indeed, you can use archetypes to better understand yourself and how you interact with others. You’ve likely heard of the Myers & Briggs personality testing model; like Myers & Briggs, you can use knowledge of archetypal energy to help you better understand yourself and others. In fact, there are many tests and methodologies that will help you determine your personal archetypes. Devised by Carolyn Myss, my favorite method is Sacred Contracts.
Sacred Contracts uses a mix of intuition, spirituality, personal history and logic to assess a person’s initial twelve archetypes. When you understand how these archetypes have started activating from the very beginning of your life as a means of survival, you can start to transform them into a force for personal power and meaning. These archetypes influence everything you do whether positive or negative and effect how you use your personal power.
Personal power involves total responsibility for yourself. It allows you to experience more freedom and joy. You become more aware of underlying motivations that you and those around you operate from. You learn to set healthy and uplifting boundaries. You become better at managing your emotions, thus affecting what chemicals are activated in your body. You start making empowering choices for your health, your spirit, and how you live your life. Who wouldn't want that?
