There have been lots of studies showing that being joyful and happy creates good health. And there have been hundreds of studies showing that depression leads to disease. Here are a few ways to bring joy into our lives and feel happy and be healthy once again.

Laugh - Instead of watching that stressful movie put on a comedy and laugh until it hurts. Studies show that laughing is great for relieving stress and stress is the biggest killer in the world. So find ways to laugh as much as possible. Start a laughing group… in fact in Ayurvedic Medicine they teach people to laugh as a health technique and it works. 

Choose to Be Happy - It’s up to us to choose to be happy no matter what the circumstances are. There's always someone worse off than we are. Sometimes is difficult, but we have the power of choice… and we can choose at any time to be happy no matter what we have going on. Many a great writer, motivational speaker, and other great people down through history have talked about choosing to be happy. 

Quiet Time - Every morning take 30 minutes to be in silence, meditate every morning and evening. Meditation in many different studies has been shown to bring about feelings of joy, contentment, and even change our health. And the new study of epigenics shows that when we meditate we actually change our genetics, turning off bad genes and turning on good genes.

Gratitude Journal - Taking the time to reflect on the day with gratitude is very important. It's so easy to get caught up in the world, and focus on the negative. But when we have a journal that we use to write down everything that happens during the day just before going to bed, and consider it all with gratitude everything changes… we become happier.

Selflessness - When we take time to help others that are need, we focus less on our own problems and see the world through the lens of love. To volunteer to feed the homeless, read to the blind, or anything else that takes our mind off ourselves this brings joy to everyone involved. 

Have a Routine - Routines are great for health and also for creating joy, because we have a rock solid foundation from which to work from. If we have a routine of getting up, getting dressed, exercising, doing something creative, and helping others throughout the day we find inner peace and joy that reflects in our health. To write down a regular routine is very important for creating happiness and great health. 

Connect with Friends - Friendship is very important, people make us laugh, and make us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves. Being part of the group of close friends can make all the difference in the world. In fact those with lots of close friends that do things together have less illnesses than those who live alone and stay away from people. So call a friend, make a luncheon date, go to the movies with friends, it’s all important for good mental health, physical health, and spiritual health. 

Change Thinking - It's important to change our inner dialogue. If we reflect on our words and inner workings of our mind and choose positive and uplifting ways of being in life… life is less stressful and we are happier. And that happiness translates into more serotonin in our brain that leads to a great mood… which in the end creates good health. Instead of saying to ourselves “That was terrible” we choose to say, “Well that will turn out better next time” and nip negativity in the bud.  

Have a Pet - Pets such as dogs and cats love us no matter what we do. And studies show that those who have pets get sick much less often than those that don’t. Plus people who have pets have less stress. There is something calming, peaceful, and joyful about taking care of a pet that loves us unconditionally. Plus we feel useful because someone depends on us. 

Spiritual Practice - There have also been lots of studies showing that those that have some sort of spiritual practice are less likely to be sick. Be it having an alter and praying, being in nature and having gratitude, saying a mantra with prayer beads, working on a mandala, or chanting or singing in praise of their great omnipotent being or avatar. All of this brings about contentment, feelings of love, and inner peace that translates into better overall health.
