Swertia Chirata or sometimes called Chitretta is a bitter herb from India that has many health benefits.
History - Swertia Chirata goes all the way back to Sanskrit times and is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita an ancient Ayurvedic healing text from India. Swertia Chirata was first brought to Europe in1839 and has been used ever since.
Ayurvedic Medicine - In Ayurvedic Medicine Swertia Chirata is called a tridosha balancing. It’s bitter, hot, pungent, and dry thus making it good for most conditions.
Grows - Swertia Chirata grows as a blue flowering plant that grows to 3 or 4 feet tall in the high Himalayas of Northern India and Bhutan.
Parts Used - All parts of the plants can be used for making either a dried herb or powder.
Bitter - Swerita is extremely bitter and because of that has many healing benefits. Because it’s very bitter taking Swerita in capsules is recommended… but it can also could be taken with some kind of sweetener like honey.
Fevers - Swerita is well known for swiftly lowering fevers from colds and flues.
Skin Disease - Swerita is great for rashes, inflamed skin, and other types of skin problems. Also works well when mixed with water for wound cleansing and healing… and it’s great for oozing skin.
Anti-Inflammatory - Swerita is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent making it great for joint disease, swelling, pain, and redness. Swerita is particular good for rheumatoid arthritis.
Liver - Swerita also works well for treating liver problems, and also does a good job of detoxing the liver. Swerita also increases metabolism thus helping with weight loss.
Constipation - Swerita is great for helping those who suffer from constipation.
Reducing Heat - Swerita has been used as an additive for clothes washing… because it creates a cooling sensation in hot weather.
Diabetes - Swerita has the ability to lower blood sugar, studies with rats given Swertia Chirata show blood sugar was greatly reduced. Swerita stimulates insulin production in pancreatic cells thus lowering blood sugar naturally… and it may be a cure for diabetes.
Anemia - Swerita can help the body produce more red blood cells like many different types of bitter herbs.
GI Tract - Swerita works well for soothing away stomachaches, nausea, GI upsets, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and inflammation of the intestines. Rats with gastric ulcers significantly improved when given Swerita because it slows the production of acids in the stomach.
Bleeding - Swerita helps with heavy monthly periods, internal bleeding, and nose bleeds.
Lung Conditions - Swerita helps with bronchitis, asthma, and inflammatory conditions of the lungs by opening up the bronchi.

Cancer - Swerita has the ability to protect against cancer because of powerful antioxidant compounds that stop the progression of precancerous lesions… especially liver cancer.

Contains - Swerita contains powerful antioxidants, alkaloids, and glycosides such as xanthones, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, chiratanin, xanthone, swertiamarin, amarogentin, chiratol, gentiopicrin, swertanone, swerchirin, and many more powerful compounds.
Dose - Most people recommend taking 0.5 to 2 grams of the whole plant per day, and if made into a tincture of 1:1 ratio taking 2 to 5 mls per day.
