4 Ways that Yoga Can Help with Back Pain

Age, trauma, illness, or bad luck with genetics can cause debilitating back pain that takes you in and out of the doctor’s office in search of relief. When traditional medicine doesn’t provide adequate results or the risk is starting to outweigh the benefits, you may want to incorporate yoga into your back pain management plan. In this past year especially, mobility has been a problem for many people. If you find that sitting at a desk for a long period of time has caused you back pain, or if you simply want to improve your overall health, these four tips may help you out.

Strengthen Back Muscles

While back pain can be caused by many different things, there can be a connection between lack of exercise and discomfort. The muscles in your back work together to provide mobility to the spine and support the spine and vertebrae. When these muscles grow, it will take some of the stress off your back. Yoga is a great way to help strengthen your back muscles and help make sure that they are continually in use, which can also help prevent any problems that may arise from inactivity.

Increase Flexibility

Back pain can drastically limit your mobility. It can turn into a vicious cycle where you don’t move because it hurts, but you continue to limit your mobility by not being active. Yoga will force you to move and stretch your body, including your back. While it may be painful at first, you will likely notice a significant improvement with the proper dedication. However, you also don’t want to push yourself too hard. Serious injuries can occur if you don’t listen to your body and stick to your limitations. Always make sure to know your limits and listen to your body, especially when you are starting out a new exercise. By having your own body in mind, you can help ensure that you don’t do anything to harm yourself while improving your health.

Improve Posture

Yoga aligns the body. If you suffer from an awkward-shaped spine, you can benefit from learning proper posture, especially if you incorporate these lessons into how you sit and stand throughout the rest of your day. Training your body to remain comfortable and healthy by sitting up straight can alleviate the pain while also making you look taller and more confident. Yoga can also help you improve your posture when you are sitting at a desk. If you are still working from home, yoga can be a great way to get up and be active. Try taking a short break every hour or so to stretch and do some light yoga to improve your posture while you work.

Enhance Body Awareness

Your body is a temple, and yoga helps you reach the inner depths of the temple. You will start by focusing on breathing and awareness. Soon, you will be more mindful and appreciative of your body in general. This can encourage you to take better care of your health and take note of any unhelpful behavior. All of this together can help you improve not only your fitness, but your overall wellness.

Overcoming back pain doesn’t happen overnight. Yoga is inexpensive, natural, and moderately effective. However, that doesn’t mean you should stop medical treatment. If you have severe pain, professional back pain management may be necessary. If you find that yoga is not enough to deal with your problems, you may want to see a medical professional to help you out. Continue to take the recommended medication, go to physical therapy, wear corrective devices, and keep up on doctors appointments, too.
