While eyesight often gets worse as we age, our day-to-day activities can speed up this process if we don't exercise caution.  To help keep your eyes young and healthy for as long as you can, avoid these common eye behaviors that are ruining your eyesight.

Not Wearing Sunglasses

Too much squinting can produce eye strain which can, in turn, lead to eye pain and headaches.  Sunglasses are beneficial for those who have light sensitivity and also help to reduce the amount of harmful UV rays that can lead to eye damage. For those with a prescription, you can get your women’s glasses with sun shielding for outdoor activities to prevent further degeneration.

Staring at a Screen All Day

You may often find yourself straining to read the text on your phone.  When constantly squinting for long periods of time you may end up with dizziness, dry eyes, or blurry vision.  While giving up your cell phone may not be practical in today's society, reducing your use to 15 to 20 minutes at a time and using a larger font may help alleviate some issues.

Failing to Schedule Regular Exams

Your eyes say a lot about your overall health.  You eye doctor is not only looking for eye conditions, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, but also can see symptoms of diabetes and high blood pressure during your regular eye exam.  Therefore it is important to not only maintain regular annual appointments to make sure you are using the correct prescribed glasses, but also to ensure that your body and eyes are healthy as well.

Not Eating a Balance Diet

While you know that food is important to maintain your body's overall health, it is also important to maintaining eye health as well.  You will need to make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day to ensure that your eyes stay properly lubricated.  Additionally, you will want to make sure that you are getting enough zinc, vitamin C and E, and omega-3 fatty acids that can be found in many fruits and vegetables.

Over Use of Eye Drops

Using eye drops is a great way to provide temporary relief to dry or itchy eyes.  While this is a great fix once and awhile, like any over-the-counter medication, it is only made for short term use.  These eye drops simply lubricate the eye and remove redness for a small length of time. So if you experience any chronic conditions, it is best to get them treated by a doctor who can provide solutions for long term use.  Overuse can lead to irritation as well as eye infections.

Maintaining eye health is important to your overall health and well-being.  By following the tips above, you will not only keep your eyes feeling better and functioning properly, you will also help to prevent long term health problems.
